The Revolutionary War • The American Revolution (1775-83) is also known as the American Revolutionary War • The conflict between Great Britain's 13 North American colonies and the colonial government, which represented the British crown. • Started when British troops and colonial militiamen in Lexington and Concord in April 1775 kicked off the armed conflict • Turned into a war for their independence. • France entered the American Revolution on the side of the colonists in 1778 • After French assistance helped the Continental Army force the British surrender at Yorktown, Virginia, in 1779, • Americans had effectively won their independence, though fighting would not formally end until 1783. http://www.history.com/topics/american-revolution

The Ride of April 26, 1777 • Colonel Ludington had to prepare for battle, so he asked his sixteen-year-old daughter Sybil to ride through the night, alerting his men of the danger and urging them to come together to fight back. Ludington rode all night through the dark woods, covering forty miles, and because of her bravery, almost the whole regiment was gathered by daybreak to fight the British. http://www.nwhm.org/education-resources/biography/biographies/sibyl-ludington/
