  1. The Nitrogen Cycle Anna Applebaum Lindsey Doyle Amy Clark Kathryn Christensen

  2. Nitrogen Fixation • Process that nitrogen gas is converted to ammonia • Necessary for biomass growth • 1 u N2 = 2 u NH4 Bacteria…mhmm, yum! It’s in your cheese!

  3. Nitrification • It is the oxidation of ammonia to nitrate • Bacteria- (Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacters) only living organism that can convert ammonia to nitrate • The rate limiting step of Nitrogen Cycle

  4. Denitrification • Anaerobic process • Nitrate-nitrogen into nitrogen gas • Reduces oxidized forms of nitrogen • Opposite process of nitrogen fixation • Preformed by heterotrophic bacteria

  5. Meanwhile… • Assimilation: inorganic nitrogen to organic nitrogen (i.e. amino acids) • Enzymes • Ammonification: reverse of assimilation • Decomposers, worms
