  2. What does STI stand for? Sexually Transmitted Infections: Infections that are spread primarily through person-to-person sexual contact How many STI’s are there? (WHO, 2013)

  3. Most Common STI’s • Chlamydia • Gonorrhea • Hepatitis • Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) • Syphilis • HIV • Genital Herpes

STI Facts • Chlamydia was the most frequently reported communicable disease in Utah, followed by Gonorrhea, and Syphilis in 2012. • Two-thirds of the chlamydia cases reported in Utah in 2011 were among people between ages 15 and 24. • In 2012, the Davis County Health Department saw a 17% increase in chlamydia, a 122% increase in gonorrhea and a 91% increase in syphilis. • More than 50% of sexually active people will get HPV at some point during their lives. • Half of all STI’s are accounted by young people age 15-24. • CDC estimates that $16 billion are spent on STI’s a year in the U.S. (CDC, 2013)

  5. Most frequently reported STI in Utah • Highest rate of infection for both males and females is ages 20-24 • Salt Lake County, Weber-Morgan County, and Davis County have highest Chlamydia rates in Utah Chlamydia 75% of infections in women and 50% in men are without symptoms

  6. Why is it called the “Clap”? Gonorrhea Rate of infection is higher in males than females Highest rate of infection for both males and females is ages 20-34 Salt Lake County, Weber-Morgan County, and Davis County have highest Gonorrhea rates after Chlamydia

Hepatitis A, B, C Hepatitis A Spread though fecal contamination Hepatitis B Spread through blood and other bodily fluids Most commonly transmitted by sex *There are vaccines for both Hepatitis A & B Hepatitis C Spread through blood to blood transmission * There is currently no vaccine available

HPV is the most common STI and is predicted to infect nearly all sexually active people at some point in their lives Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) 40 types Some cause genital warts and some cause certain types of cancers Treatments: Clinical Freezing Surgery Prevention: Vaccines (Gardasil & Cervarix) Prevents against the 4 most common types of HPV Recommended that boys and girls receive the vaccine at ages 11-12 years

  9. Syphilis Rate of infection is higher in males than females Highest rate of infection for both males and females is ages 25-34 Salt Lake County has highest Syphilis rate followed by Weber-Morgan

  10. Herpes Two types of Herpes Virus Herpes Simplex Viruses type 1 (HSV-1) or type 2 (HSV-2). 1 out of 6 people aged 14 to 49 years have genital HSV-2 infection. HSV-2 infection is more common in women (approximately one out of five women aged 14 to 49 years) than in men (about one out of nine men aged 14 to 49 years). Most people infected with HSV-2 are not aware of their infection • There is no treatment that can cure herpes. “Cold sores”

  11. HIV More than 1 million people are living with HIV in the U.S. 1 in 5 living with HIV is aware of their infection. 4 Stages of HIV Stage Asymptomatic Symptomatic Advanced HIV to AIDS Human Immunodeficiency Virus

  12. Intrapersonal Factors (Boils down to your lifestyle) • Unprotected sex • Multiple partners • Early age of sexual onset • Alcohol & illicit drug use

  13. Interpersonal Factors • Abusive environment • Friends/peer- social support • Significant others • Negligence/ parental guidance

  14. Community Factors Lack of screening Education/schooling Education restrictions/ Policies Workplace

  15. Prevention & Reduction • Use condoms and lube (vaginal, anal sex) • Limit partners • Dental dams (oral sex) • Don’t share needles • Get tested regularly • Ask status/ open communication
