  2. Characters • Muse- a daughter of Zeus, credited with divine inspiration • Narrator- “me,” First person, the poet • “He”- Odysseus • Telemachus- Odysseus’ son • Penelope- Odysseus’ wife • Ithaca- Odysseus’ home

  3. Characters • Athena- goddess of wisdom and warfare • Zeus- the ruler of the gods and goddesses • Helios- the sun god, who raises his cattle on the island of Thrinacia

  4. Vocabulary • Harried- adj. tormented; harassed • Contend(ing)- v. to struggle in opposition against difficulties • Valor- n. the qualities of a hero, courage, boldness

  5. Setting • Wandering the Mediterranean Sea for ten years after Trojan War.

  6. ExpositionWhat do we learn in Book 1? • Odysseus is a great war hero from the battle of Troy. • He is Greek • He tried to save his men, but the men were foolish and died. • His son, Telemachus, is now a grown man. • His wife, Penelope, is being besieged by suitors to marry her.
