  1. Secure real-time audio/video communication – H.350, Encryption & Gatekeeper/Proxy – using H.323 (…and a bit SIP) Tutorial/Workshop Session - The future of H.323 – Are H.323 and SIP merging? - 19th APAN Meeting Bangkok, Thailand January 2005

  2. Outline • What else do we have? What else could merge? • H.323 vs. AccessGrid? • H.323 vs. VRVS? • H.323 vs. Telesuite? • H.323 vs. SIP? • What do we want/get in the future?

  3. What else do we have? What else could merge? • H.323 vs. AccessGrid • http://www.accessgrid.org • multicast based; based on MBone tools (VIC/RAT) • High demand of computing power (3 PCs, one for video, one audio, one data) • Some H.323 – AccessGrid Gateways are in place • Look to Stephen??? • Unlikely (my personal option) that H.323 and AccessGrid will merge → too different AccessGrid node UC Berkeley

  4. What else do we have? What else could merge? • H.323 vs. VRVS • http://www.vrvs.org • Nice room based booking system • based on MBone tools • Gateway in place, but quality is rather bad, <10fps, etc. • Unlikely that H.323 and VRVS will merge → too different

  5. What else do we have? What else could merge? • H.323 vs. Telesuite • http://www.telesuite.com • “Scotty beam me up” • Great looking VC system • You get the feeling of Cpt. Picard on the Enterprise • What standard are they using? Propriety? • (Very) Unlikely that H.323 and Telesuite merge

  6. What else do we have? What else could merge? • H.323 and SIP • It is likely that both standards will merge in 3 to 5 years (my prediction) • Both standard have a lot in common, except the singalling is different (there are some more differences but in general only the signalling is different) • Audio/Video streams are both udp based rtp streams • They already work together in several MCUs • Some vendors have both stacks in their machines • Both standards will live next to each other for the next couple of years with some bridging they work together…

  7. What do we want/get in the future?
