  2. Austere • The austere man was able to survive on his low wages by living simply. • Conditions in the prison could hardly be more austere. • She decorated the room with a great deal of austerity. Adjective • Having great economy; showing self-control when it comes to foregoing luxuries and frills; stern in manner or appearance

  3. Avaricious • The avaricious businessman would do anything for money. • Avariciousness can never lead to true happiness. • He was so avaricious that he would not even drop his spare change in the Salvation Army basket. Adjective Greedy

  4. Frugal • Many college students must live frugally while away at school. • A truly frugal person would not spend so much money on shoes. • Many people have difficulty learning frugality if they grew up with plenty of money. Adjective Careful with money; thrifty; not prodigal or wasteful

  5. Mercenary • The mercenary employee thought nothing of stabbing his friend in the back to get a promotion. • Some people have the mercenary idea to marry for money instead of love. • Themercenary athlete only played for his contract; he didn’t care if his team won or lost. Adjective Greedy for self-gain; thinking only of money-making

  6. Miserly • Ebenezer Scrooge is one of the most famous miserly characters in western literature. • The miserly woman left a tiny tip at the restaurant. • My miserly uncle was worth nearly $1 million when he died. Adjective Careful with how money is spent; thrifty

  7. Parsimonious • The parsimonious voter refused to vote for any candidate he thought might raise taxes. • Government parsimony prevented the public works project from going forward. • The parsimonious woman lived very simply, denying herself every indulgence. Adjective Overly thrifty or miserly

Penurious • The penurious woman could barely afford to pay her rent. • She was very generous and hospitable, in contrast to her penurious husband. • My childhood included a number of penurious years in which we had trouble paying for necessities. Thrifty • The thrifty parents dressed their children in clothes their older siblings had grown out of. • Whenever I go to the grocery store, I like to shop thriftily and see if any items are on sale. • My thrifty friend loves to do all her shopping at outlet stores.
