The town’s name may be linked to St. Andrew who passed through this land in ancient times or may derive from the Latin wordAntrum meaning cave because of the presence of caves and grottos in the area. What is certain is that Andria, like most the Apulian towns, bears the marks of many and different invaders throughout the centuries. Among them The Greeks and the Normans, but it is to the Emperor Frederick II of Swabia in the XIII century that Andria proudly links its memory to.

  8. The town reached the climax of its splendor during his rule as it is witnessed by the inscription on the town gate, called gate of S. Andrea. It is in the Cathedral Crypt that Frederick II decided to have his two wives buried and the most original castle, Castel del Monte, built on Mount Caccia, 680 m. above the sea level. The Castle, with its impressive octagonal shape, symbolizing the Emperor crown, dominates the surrounding Murgia allowing a splendid panoramic view of the area.
