  1. Interior Design STAR Event

  2. Meet Your Clients

  3. The Space • The home is laid out similarly to this ranch home.

  4. Scope of the Project • You, as the designer, will need to design and furnish two adjacent spaces for your clients. • The garage conversion to a living space for the grandfather • The courtyard into an outdoor living space. • You will create the required floor plan showing the proposed changes to the garage without changing the footprint dimensions. You will approach both areas as if they were white boxes.

  5. Garage Conversion • Small office space • Space for reading, watching television, and sleeping • Plenty of storage for memorabilia • Grandfather likes to get together with his friends. • He has arthritis in his hands and back • He plans to use the existing adjacent bath and utility room. • He wants direct access to the outdoor living space.

  6. Items provided by the client • All furnishings • Queen size bed, dresser, side tables, desk and chair, computer, bookshelves, a chair and ottoman, an end table, lamps, a round table and chairs that seats two and a medium size television on a stand.

  7. Items to Be Purchased by the Designer (YOU) • Floor, wall, window and ceiling treatments • You are to create a welcoming entrance and show exterior architectural details of the garage renovation.

  8. The Outdoor Living space • The concrete courtyard will be updated to an outdoor living space with plantings. • The space should include seating and dining for 12-15 people

  9. Items Provided by: The Designer (You) The Client • A table • Chairs for six • Floor, wall, window, and ceiling treatments • Finishes, furnishings, lighting and accessories

  10. Client Preferences and priorities • Private exterior entrance for the grandfather. • Use of sustainable materials. • Universal design features. • The outdoor living space will be used daily • Outdoor living room should reflect the families cultural heritage, a place for celebrations. • The garage should be welcoming and comfortable. There should be no signs that it was once a garage. *You will determine the geographic region for this home.

  11. What Should Be included • A Space Plan for the garage conversion and outdoor living space. You will determine the square footage of the spaces. • An elevation in color to show the new exterior of the garage where the doors used to be. (include full width and height) • Furniture, accessories and lighting to indicate the cultural heritage. • The budget: material cost for floor, wall, window and ceiling treatments, finishes, requested furnishings, lighting, and accessories. • The client has no set budget but would prefer you keep it cost effective.

  12. Need a vision of the end product? • I have a 6 minute video published by FCCLA of an Interior Design STAR Event being presented. If you are interested in watching this video to give you a better idea of what is expected, please come talk to me during individual work time.

  13. What now? • Do you want to work in groups or individually? • Groups should be no bigger than 3 people. • Get into your groups or on your own and begin brainstorming your plan. • Remember to fill out your FCCLA Planning Process Summary Page as you go along.
