  3. Figurative Language Words that provide a more “colorful” way of expressing something Concept

  4. An example is: “Raining cats and dog” What does this mean? This? Or this? APK

  5. Why figurative language? Where does this phrase come from? In England, houses were covered with thatch. In the cold raining weather, the cats and dogs would climb into the roofs and when the roof was wet, the thatch could not support their weight and the cats and dogs would fall through the roofs. APK

  6. Recognizing Figurative Language The opposite of literal language is figurative language. Figurative language is language that means more than what it says on the surface. • It usually gives us a feeling about its subject. • Poets use figurative language almost as frequently as literal language. When you read poetry, you must be conscious of the difference. Otherwise, a poem may make no sense at all.

  10. Recognizing metaphors “I’ve eaten so much I feel as if I could literally burst!” • In this case, the person is not using the word literally in its true meaning. Literal means "exact" or "not exaggerated." By pretending that the statement is not exaggerated, the person stresses how much he has eaten. Literal language is language that means exactly what is said. Most of the time, we use literal language.

  11. Metaphor! She was a bright student. We all know that “bright” refers to light. But in this sentence we are comparing intelligence to light. It’s a metaphor! CD

  13. Metaphor- The comparison of one thing to another without the use of like or as Example: The crowd was an angry beast. Non Example: The beast was angry amongst the crowd. Just Describing what the beast is doing rather than describing the crowd!

  15. Why else is it important to analyze the use of figurative language in context? • It is important to analyze the use of figurative language and how they are used in contexts because it will help you become a better reader. • It will also prepare you for junior and high school.
