  2. Background Information • Washington holds New York with less than 20,000 poorly trained, armed, and disciplined men. • General Howe has Staten Island with 427 battle ships and over 30,000 men.

  3. Washington sends about 11,000 troops across the East River to defend Brooklyn, setting up defenses along Brooklyn Heights, leaving Jamaica Pass open for attack. Washington learns that Howe plans to ship troops over to Brooklyn from Staten Island August 1776 Approx. a week before battle Isabel sees Curzon at the watering pump as an American soldier.

  4. British send 22,000 troops ashore to Brooklyn The British execute a 3 way attack: near their landing, at Battle Pass, and around the rear of Battle Pass, surrounding the Americans. Howe sets up camp less than 200 yards in front of the Americans to wait for Washington’s surrender. August 22 August 27 Isabel contemplates the British offer for freedom.

  5. Washington retreats back across the East River with heavy fog and thick rain. Over 9,000 troops and supplies are brought across within 12 hours. British capture Brooklyn and occupy New York. September 1776 August 29 A few weeks after the battle Isabel’s service to the British is denied because her owners are Tory.
