Sustainable Wall Design: Life Cycle Assessment for Danish Construction
Discover how Optiroc Denmark prepares for future market demands through a comprehensive Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of wall materials. Understand the environmental impacts of the production process, and learn about the key parameters that define the performance of the Danish house wall. This LCA examines the essential elements such as energy consumption, global warming potential, and waste production associated with brick, cement, insulation, and steel. Explore the multi-faceted role of the wall as a climate shield and its importance in sustainable construction.

Purpose • To be prepared for future market demands. • Learn more about LCA and LCA methodology. • Learn about own products and own processes. • Where in our production is the environmental • impact greatest?
Function The function of the product is important for defining the functional unit. Following the LCA guideline, the function of the wall was described as: ’ climate shield (watertight, insulating), "face" of the building and should therefore have a nice appearance.’ In addition the wall has other defining parameters, such as heat and sound insulating properties. These should be included where they affect the performance and type and quantity of materials used. All utilities affecting the dimensions should be included in the functional unit, as far as possible. The functional unit for this case is a Danish house wall, 2.8m high, enclosing a floor area of 10x10m (excl. doors and windows), with a 60 year life.
