The Compassion of Jesus • Weak and suffering, Matt 4:23-24; 9:35-36; 14:14; 20:34 • His miracles are why we put our faith in Him as the Christ, the Son of God • Revealed by the Father through His words and works, Matt 16:16-17; Jno 5:36-37 • Transfiguration gave a glimpse of His glory and power (Matt 17:1-9) • He explained about John and by implication, that He is Messiah (Matt 17:10-13)

Record of the Miracle(Matt 17:14-21; Mark 9:14-29) • Multitude gathered around as the scribes disputed with unsuccessful apostles, Mk 9:14 • Lesson: There will always be skeptics who have hard hearts, Jno 12:37-41 • Boy afflicted due to demonic possession is brought to Jesus, Matt 17:15 • Lesson: Innocent suffering is no reason to reject God, Job 2:9-10

Record of the Miracle(Matt 17:14-21; Mark 9:14-29) • Disciples failed to heal boy due to unbelief, Matt 17:16, 19-20 (10:1, 8) • Lesson: Disciples must trust the power of faith, Luke 17:5-6 • Jesus rebuked unbelief, Matt 17: 17; Mk 9:19 • Lesson: God is longsuffering, but He will punish unbelief, 1 Pet 3:20-21; 2 Pet 3:9

Record of the Miracle(Matt 17:14-21; Mark 9:14-29) • Goodness of Jesus (His power and compassion) stirred an appeal for faith from the father, Mk 9:23-24 • Lesson: God’s goodness urges people of faith to repent, Rom 2:4 • Jesus commended power of faith, Mk 9:23; Matt 17:20-21 • Lesson: Faith is the victory that overcomes the world, 1 Jno 5:4-5

Record of the Miracle(Matt 17:14-21; Mark 9:14-29) • Jesus cast out the demon, healing the boy, Matt 17:18; Mk 9:25-27 • Lesson: Jesus does all things well, Mk 7:37 • Jesus explained to the disciples their need for faith, prayer and fasting, Matt 17:20-21 • Lesson: Faith must be coupled with devoted service in order to please God, Heb 11:6

Mark 11:22-24; James 4:15 • God’s will be done, Matt 6:10 (10:1) • Strengthen your faith by living a devoted life

  10. Additional Lessons(Matt 17:14-21; Mark 9:14-29) • “Faith-healers” accuse the wrong person of a lack of faith, Matt 17:19-20; Acts 3:6, 16; 4:7-10 • Father pleaded for a reason to believe, and Jesus gave it to him! Mk 9:23-24

  11. Additional Lessons(Matt 17:14-21; Mark 9:14-29) • Age of miracles has ended • Purpose fulfilled, transmission ended • Produce faith, Jno 20:30-31 • Validate the gospel, Mark 16:20 • Only by Holy Spirit baptism and through laying on of the apostles’ hands, Acts 1:8; 8:18

  12. Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!(Mark 9:24) “He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthen in faith, giving glory to God...” (Romans 4:20)
