Paraphrasing. Paraphrasing means to rewrite information from an author in your own words. You paraphrase short passages of an article such as a paragraph or two on a note entry. For example, to paraphrase the second paragraph on the first page of the “Town Center” article you might write:

  2. Paraphrasing means to rewrite information from an author in your own words.

  3. You paraphrase short passages of an article such as a paragraph or two on a note entry. For example, to paraphrase the second paragraph on the first page of the “Town Center” article you might write: Cohen says malls can’t replace town centers because poor people can’t get to malls (no cars); people can’t make speeches to anyone passing by because in the mall a security guard will ask speakers to leave; no pamphlets can be put on cars; free speech is limited.

  4. The Three Steps of Paraphrasing • 1. Read the material several times before writing your paraphrase. • 2. Write the information in your own words without looking at the original material. • 3. Check your paraphrase to make sure you have the main idea of the original material.
