Admitting a Patient • House staff team: patient very ill, or offers house staff an exceptional educational experience • Call ADB to get a bed assignment, 305-2624 • Call admitting coordinator to get a team assignment, 305-9150 • Call admitting resident • Leave a daily note, discuss plans with house staff daily • Do not write orders • Involve HS in your thinking and invite their thoughts: teach! • Discharge summary is your responsibility • PA service • Call ADB to get a bed; call admitting coordinator re PA availability • Call the PA service to discuss the patient, beeper 88774 • Leave a daily note, discuss plans with PA service daily • Discharge summary is your responsibility • Allen: Call ADB (45079) and hospitalist (beeper 84558)

Teaching Opportunities Sign Up in Spring • Two months per year • Ward or ICU attending month • Subspecialty consult service month • Body in Health in Disease (pathophysiology course for medical students) • Additional opportunities that may substitute: • Precept third year students: 5 weeks • Foundations of Clinical Medicine • Small group preceptor • Physical diagnosis tutorials • Clerkship preceptor

Faculty Development • Orientation for ward attending, precepting and other activities include critical information about expectations for you and for your learners, and important opportunities to enhance your skills. Please attend! • Seminars, work shops and other opportunities through the Glenda Garvey Teaching Academy and CERE (Center for Education Research and Evaluation)

  7. OPPE OPPE • OPPE and FPPE (Ongoing and Focused Professional Practice Evaluations): • JCAHO language for a formal process for monitoring clinical and academic performance, compliance and good citizenship • Division chief oversight

What OPPE Evaluates • Professional Liability Activity: The data is self reported in the Professional Conduct section of the appointment/reappointment  application. • Patient Complaints and Compliments: Information may often be captured through Physician Profiles, Patient Satisfaction Surveys or in correspondence maintained in Service Chief or Chair’s office • Clinical Activities: Mortality, LOS and complication data made available by NYPH. Number of Quality Assurance Review and Billing Compliance audits and reviews. • Teaching Contribution: Based on teaching activities, resident evaluations and other teaching evaluations tools. • Medical Knowledge: Scholarly activities such as awards and honors, publications, lectures, research and invited speakers • Administrative Contributions: Eligibility and timeliness of completion of medical record documentation. Timely response to requested information and compliance with NYPH requirements. • Attendance at Departmental Conferences and Meeting/Contributions to the Department:  Attendance at QA meetings, M&M conferences, Grand Rounds, Divisional conferences and overall adherence to maintaining “good standing” within the department.
