  3. Definition • Cre-den-tial (kri-den-shel) n. 1. A factor entitling one to confidence, credit, or authority. 2. Credentials. Evidence attesting to one’s right to credit, confidence, or authority Webster’s New College Dictionary

  4. What do we mean when we say credential? • The police call their badge a ‘credential’ • Hospitals refer to their process of allowing physicians to practice in their facility as ‘credentialing’

  6. In Texas, you need to take an exam • All out-of-state practitioners must sit for an examination in Austin to obtain a Texas medical license NO EXCEPTIONS!!!!

  7. Usual Components of Credentialing 1 • Verification of Unrestricted State Medical License With Appropriate Licensing Agency • Verification of Valid, Unrestricted DEA Certificate

  8. Usual Components of Credentialing 2 • Verification of Full, Unrestricted Admitting Privileges and Good Standing on the Medical Staff at a Hospital • Board Certification Status With the American Board of Medical Specialties • Review of Malpractice Claims History

  9. Usual Components of Credentialing 3 • Verification of Education and Training • Review of Work History • Verification of Adequate Malpractice Insurance • Proof of Appropriate Professional Licensing

  10. Who needs to be credentialed? • Physicians • Nurses • Mid Level Practitioners • Pharmacists • EMTs & Paramedics • CNAs, Laboratory & ancillary staff

  11. To what degree do we need to credential MRC members? • Verify Identification • Confirm appropriate valid license • Verify immunization status • Substantiate special advanced training if claimed • Verify clinical skills

  12. What about BCI Checks? • What will be your criteria for rejection? • Who will perform the check? • Is there an appeal process? • Do you have the need/right to conduct this check? • How much does it cost?

RI MRC Credentialing Requirements • Government issued Photo ID • Valid medical license or certification • Up-to-date immunizations (which we provide) • Attendance at MRC Orientation session • Willingness to participate in MRC Events • Precepted skills verification only for those who will volunteer clinically

RI MRC Advantages • Compact Geography • A nice tidy One Million Folks • To a large degree, we all know one another (OK, not everyone) • RI-1 DMAT (the grantee) has lots of experience in recruiting, training, and “credentialing” medical volunteers • We already have a place at the table in the emergency preparedness community
