  5. Transformation of Rhetorical Theory • Anzaldua is committed to multiplicity, instability, disorientation, insecurity, and conflicting demands. She resists the tendencies manifest in traditional rhetorical theory toward stability, rigidity, codification , and confinement of terms of meaning. (Foss, p. 124) • Ethos: In the borderlands she contrasts “truthfulness”(main stream confirmation) to “making faces” • Exigence: Instead of fixing a defect keep the wound open and festering • Identification: making no attempt, the choice of the rebel • Change: multiple options t audience rather than one focus that is supported
