  2. How is an academic index calculated?

  3. Every performance level is awarded a certain point value. Novice nonperformance = 0 points Novice medium = 13 points Novice high = 26 points Apprentice low = 40 points Apprentice medium = 60 points Apprentice high = 80 points Proficient = 100 points Distinguished = 140 points The points are totaled and averaged

  4. An Example If we have 1 apprentice low, 4 apprentice highs, 3 proficients and a distinguished… 1 apprentice low = 40 4 apprentice highs = 80 + 80 + 80 + 80 = 320 3 proficients = 100 + 100 + 100 = 300 1 distinguished = +140 800 800 / 9 students = 88.89 academic index

  5. How are student performance levels identified?

  6. Test Format Reading, Math, Social Studies and Science all have approximately 40 MC and 5 OR. PL/VS has 19 MC, A&H has 19 MC and 2 OR. On Demand Writing has 2 prompts (Remember, open response counts 50% and multiple choice counts 50%)

  7. How many points did a student have to score to be proficient?

  8. In 2008, a student can score a total of 36 points in most subject areas 32 multiple choice items (1 point each) = 32 points 4 open response items (4 points each) x 2= 32 points 64 points (Remember, open response and multiple choice have to have equal number of points to count 50/50.)

  11. Varied slightly – depending on two factors: • Form of test (1A, 2B, etc not all same level of difficulty) • Across content areas: i.e. 37 in Math not necessarily same as a 37 in Science

  12. Let’s Calculate an Index Say this is your math class 1(NM) + 1(NH) + 2(AL) + 1(AM) + 2(AH) + 5(P) + 1(D) = 1(13) + 1(26) + 2(40) + 1(60) + 2(80) + 5(100) + 1(140) = 979 979 / 13 students = 75.3

  13. What would happen if every student scored ONE point higher onONE open response item?

  14. 1(NH) + 1(AL) + 2(AM) + 2(AH) + 6(P) + 1(D) = 1(26) + 1(40) + 2(60) + 2(80) + 6(100) + 1(140) = 1086 / 13 students = 83.53 That's an 8 point increase!

  17. 1(NH) + 1(AL) + 2(AM) + 1(AH) + 7(P) + 1(D) = 1(26) + 1(40) + 2(60) + 1(80) + 7(100) + 1(140) = 1106 Now it's a 10 point increase! 1106 / 13 students = 85.08

  19. One more time! 1(AL) + 1(AM) + 2(AH) + 8(P) + 1(D) = 1(40) + 1(60) + 2(80) + 8(100) + 1(140) = 1200 That's a 17 point gain! 92.3!!! 1200 / 13 students =

  22. Let’s Look at North Bullitt • In the area of math, we had • 22 Novice low x 0 points = 0 • 36 Novice medium x 13 points = 568 • 43 Novice high x 26 points = 1,118 • 26 Apprentice low x 40 points = 1,240 • 30 Apprentice medium x 60 points = 1,800 • 29 Apprentice high x 80 points = 2,320

  23. 63 Proficient x 100 points = 6,300 • 17 Distinguished x 140 points =2,380 • Total points = 15,726 / 266 = 59.1

  24. The Power of One at North Bullitt • If the 22 students who scored 0 on the math section had scored Novice Medium = 286 more points • If 21 students who scored novice high on the math had scored Apprentice Low = 840 • Our index would have been 63.3

  25. Are You Ready For More? • If 14 students who scored apprentice high on the math test scored proficient = 1,400 • Our math index would have been 68.8! • The Power of One, The Power of You!

  26. What Can I Do To Raise My Scores One Point on Open Response Questions? • It is as easy as A, B, E. • Answer all parts of the question • Because.. Tell why you chose the answer you did, • Examples.. Give examples to support your statements

  27. What Can I Do To Increase The Number of Multiple Choice Questions I Answer Correctly? • Pay attention to Flashback Questions in your classes • Eliminate answers you know are wrong • Go back and double check your answers if time permits.

  28. What Are My Teachers Doing To Help Me Raise My Scores? • Including Flashbacks in your classes to help review material covered, so it is fresh in your mind • Creating tests like the one you take in the spring • Allowing students to rewrite open response questions, so you know what a 3 looks like.

Why Should I Care? • Teachers and Counselors use test scores to schedule classes. • Students who need extra help, according to Think Link and CATS scores are scheduled in foundations reading and math classes, ACT prep classes, College Readiness classes • Driving permits are assigned based on CATS test scores • Because your scores reflect you and your school
