PRIMER TALLER PARIS 21 PARA CENTROAMÉRICA BACKGROUNDS • The majority of countries is found in the process of improving their statistical capacities for the follow up of the social impact of the processes of the economic reform. • Need to count with modern statistical systems before the phenomena such as: finalization of arms conflicts, natural disasters, drop of prices of traditional products of exportation, migrations, risks of food insecurity, etc.

PRIMER TALLER PARIS 21 PARA CENTROAMÉRICA BACKGROUNDS • Scarce advances of the experiences exchange processes in actualization statistical matter, in spite of that almost all the countries have modified the institutionality and legislation of the public statistical function. • Invitation to the First Shop PARIS 21 for the Andean Community celebrated in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia, May of 2002 • In the shop celebrated in Bolivia El Salvador was accepted as country headquarters for being a regional shop .

  5. PRIMER TALLER PARIS 21 PARA CENTROAMÉRICA GENERAL OBJETIVE To let everybody know the statistical programs of the Central American region and incite to the international organizations, sub-regions and local so they can facilitate the execution of such programs.

PRIMER TALLER PARIS 21 PARA CENTROAMÉRICA MAIN ACTIVITIES • Presentation of the statistical system of each country • Optic of producers and users of information through two presentations • One that analyze the present situation of the statistical system, and • Another that show fortresses, weaknesses and proposed ofimprovement, responding to 5 themes: - Production of information, accessibility and quality (mentioned the situation of the Nationals Census) - Demand of information and how is used it - Financing of the statistical system - Expected contribution of the international community - Cooperation among the countries of the region

MAIN ACTIVITIES • Presentation of the international organizations • Includes to financial organizations, internationals, regions, sub-regions and bilateral. • The agencies that more contribute to the statistical development of the region will be invited to do presentations around two themes: Strategies and programs of support to the statistical activity in the financial, technical levels, management and aid to the definition of politics of the countries. Statistical Demand of information of the international institutions.

MAIN ACTIVITIES • Round table upon needs of the countries of Central America that foment the development and reinforce of the statistical systems. • A program of short and medium run will be prepared for each country, taking into account the terms and conditions given by the international agencies.

GENERAL ASPECTS OF THE FIRST SHOP PARIS 21 FOR CENTRAL AMERICA • Program of Organization: • Organization Committee Constitution • The Committee is responsible for agreeing objectives, terms of reference, agenda and preparation of the informationof the event • The Office of the secretary of PARIS21 approves proposal of the Committee in which the general information of the Shop is detailed • The invitations will be envoys jointly by the responsible localities and the Office of the secretary of PARIS21

GENERAL ASPECTS OF THE FIRST SHOP PARIS 21 FOR CENTRAL AMERICA • Working Calendar: • Agree a note of organization of the Shop • Constitute the Committee of Organization • Prepare a financing request letter • Prepare documents of organization: agenda, terms ofreference, objective, etc. • Prepare the budget of financing of the shop • Establish the list of participants • Remit note to the expositors • Letter with final date of confirmation of participation • Remission of participation written of the expositors • Execution of the Shop

CONCLUSIONS The majority of Directors of the Offices of Statistics of the Central American region coincided in which the Shop can be an opportunity to promote technique and financially the programs and projects oriented to the reinforcement of the statistics for the battle of the poverty (First Shop PARIS21 for the Andean Community)

CONCLUSIONS A Shop PARIS21 for the Central American region is very opportune in these moments due to efforts that the majority of the countries by exceeding the difficult economic social development conditions that faces their population; as well as also due to the initiatives that its statistical systems are being carrying out to fortify them

CONCLUSIONS It is considered that it is priority (and urgent in some cases) to support the efforts of the countries of the Central American region to fortify its statistical capacities oriented to the battle of the poverty; mainly through the subsequent dynamics that generate the regional Shops supported by PARIS21, as are the possibility to organize National Shops
