  2. Cootamundra Beach . • The Coota Beach Volleyball Festival was established in March 2000. The aim was to create a unique event that would attract attention to the town and consequently showcase local businesses. • Cootamundra has always been shortened to 'Coota'. The idea was to somehow link this with Kuta Beach in Bali. The initial planning therefore focused on creating an event that somehow had a beach theme. The obvious problem was creating a beach theme 400km away from the nearest coastline. • Long story short, the solution was to construct a full size beach volleyball court in the centre intersection of the main street of Cootamundra which is also the Olympic Highway. So at 4.00am on Saturday morning 17th February 2001, approximately 100 tonnes of sand was dumped on the main street of Cootamundra and Coota Beach was born..... • From that day, in February every year, the CBD of Cootamundra is transformed into a beach oasis. Over 400 tonne of sand is now used to construct three full size Beach Volleyball courts. In addition to this, we have construced a permanet full size court adjacent to where the tempory courts are placed. • Teams from Sydney, Canberra, Wagga Wagga and surrounding towns visit Cootamundra to serve, set and spike their way into a share of the prize money on offer. • The Coota Beach Volleyball Festival has grown significantly since its first year in 2001 where we had one court, 16 teams and one day of competition. In 2008 we had four courts, 64 teams and two days of non stop volleyball action. • The Festival also incorporates a sprint triathlon that has been held for six years. The triathlon is quickly becoming an event in its own right. For more information please click below

  8. What was said , in the Papers • IT has been lauded by many as the 'best carnival ever'. • The 2009 Cootamundra Beach Volleyball weekend saw record entries, record crowds, the best on court action in the history of the event and fittingly the major prizemoney went to a team that has become synonymous with the tournament Tip Top. • The Canberra-based side maintained its freakish record on Coota Beach, yesterday's 36-32 victory over fellow ACT side Chuppa Chubs was seventh Tip Tops' triumph in as many years. • The carnival means so much to them that one team member travelled from inter-state just to take her place on the sand. • "I moved up to Queensland just before Christmas, but before I left all the guys were telling me I had to be back for Coota," Caitlyn Young said just moments after she played a crucial role in the final result. • "It is always such a great weekend and I think this year's has truly surpassed anything in the past. • "We don't come here just to win, we come for the fun and friendships and Coota really does have something unique by staging this carnival." • In the early stages of yesterday's A grade decider Chupp Chubs, who were carnival debutantes, gave their more fancied rivals a scare by going point for point. • However a series of booming serves back up with some powerful front court play saw the defending champions take a narrow advantage into the break. • Tip Top snuck away to a 10-point lead in the early stages of the second half, but were forced to withstand a late rally from their colourful rivals before hanging on for a four-point victory. • Spokesperson for Chuppa Chubs Peter McCurdy said he marveled at how well the weekend was organised. • "We heard about the carnival through friends of ours who had played in the past and we were very keen to come and see for ourselves," McCurdy said. • "To have 84 teams playing on five courts is a massive task, but everything just worked like clockwork. • "It's the most fun we've had playing volleyball for years and we'll definitely be back." • With a staggering number of teams, organisers divided the masses into seven divisions for Sunday's finals, with a number of local teams featuring in the money matches. • Coota Concrete can lay claim to being the most successful Coota team after they defeated Plastered Turtles 2 in the B grade decider, while Come Alive, Beached As, Fat Chance and IGA Arts were the other local sides who took home their share of the prizemoney. • The most relieved man on Coota Beach yesterday was tournament coordinator Simon Sutherland. • "I'd have to say it was the best (Carnival), Sutherland said. • "To have 84 teams teams, many of who were playing for the first time and to pretty much be able to run to the schedule all weekend was amazing. • "We had so many people come up to us at the registration desk and say they've had an absolute ball and thanked us for putting such a great carnival on. • "As a committee, you can't ask for much more than that. • "This year may be over, but we're already looking towards the 10th anniversary next year.
