What is Telehealth? • Telehealth is defined as the use of digital technologies to deliver medical care, health education, and public health services by connecting multiple users in separate locations. • Our telehealth definition includes a broad range of technology-enabled health care services including telemedicine, which is the diagnosis and treatment of illness or injury.

What are Telehealth Services? • Telehealth services consist of: • Diagnosis • Treatment • Assessment • Monitoring • Communications • Education • The telecommunications services include: • High-Speed telecommunications • Health information sharing • Videoconferencing • Digital image transmission

How Does Telehealth Work? • Three methods of delivery • Video conferencing – used for real-time patient-provider consultations, provider-to-provider communications and for language translation services • Remote patient monitoring – using electronic devices to transmit patient health information to health care providers • Store & forward technology – electronically transmit videos & digital images (ie: X-rays) between primary care providers and medical specialists

Telehealth History • The pioneering effort in digital health data is the creation of electronic health records (EHR). • These systems have been in use since the 1960’s (almost 60 years!) • Began with physicians’ goal to find a convenient method to store and access health data. • EHR systems can contain collections of electronic health information about a patient or a population.

The Value of Telehealth • Raising expectations and awareness • Possibilities for future generations • Patients treated as customers • Compare services from various providers • Shop for a provider matching the requirements of the patient • Medical providers can bill for services delivered in unconventional methods but are driven by consumer/ patient needs

Telehealth Moving toward the Future • Evolving EHR platforms enable patients and providers to share information • Long term monitoring leads to trend analysis • Trending data leads to more effective patient diagnosis • Patients are customers with the ability to comparison shop • Their goal is to find a provider that matches their requirements • Healthcare providers have the ability to generate revenue for services rendered in nontraditional methods
