  2. Characteristics of an Honors Student • Self-motivated and self-disciplined • Independent thinker and worker • Excellent attendance • Excellent time management skills • Able to multi-task • Meets assignment deadlines • Produces quality work • Demonstrates strong reading and writing skills

  4. Honors Placement • English Honors 1 • 10.0 on Gates/McGinitie • 8th grade English teacher recommendation • A in 8th grade reg. English or B in Honors English 9th- CP English Honors 1 10th- CP English Honors 2 11th- AP English 3 12th- AP English 4

Honors Placement Accelerated Biology • 10.0 on Gates/McGinitie • Accelerated Geometry placement or higher • B or better in 8th grade science coursework • Successful completion qualifies for AP Chemistry in 10th 10th-AP Chemistry 11th-AP Biology or AP Physics(if enrolled in AP Calc.) 12th- Any other AP/non-AP science

  6. Honors Placement • World Geography Honors • 11.0 on Gates/McGinite • GATE qualified in 8th gr. with 3.5 gpa min. • Honors level US History in 8th gr. with “B” or better • OR Pass entry exam 9th-World Geo. Honors 10th-AP World History 11th-AP U.S. History 12th-AP Gov’t/AP Economics

  7. Additional AP/Honors Courses • World Language: AP Japanese 4 and AP Spanish 4 and AP Spanish 5 • Other AP Courses: AP Computer Science, AP Psychology, AP Studio Art, AP Art History, AP Music Theory, Advanced Music Honors for Choir, Band and Orchestra,

  8. Petition Process • Parent considerations before petitioning: • Student readiness, student motivation and true capabilities • Petition • Placement is not guaranteed • Based on seat availability • One semester commitment, regardless of student grade performance

Health Requirement • One semester course • Traditional Pathway – 9th Grade • Health/Elective • Impacted Schedules • Reviewed in Fall • Schedule options for delayed health • Summer options after 9th, 10th, or 11th • Included in schedule during Junior/Senior year • Adult School, after school, during school year of 12th

  14. Why take AP and Honors Level Courses? • Shows rigor and challenge. • Shows student commitment to education. • Demonstrates maturity and college readiness. • Quantity is not a substitute for performance

  15. Counselor Presentations • 4-year Educational Plans -Initial plan done in November/December in English class during 9th grade year -Revision done in February of 10th grade year • 9th and 10th Getting Ready for College and High School Basics Night - November, date TBA

HBUHSD Recognition Programs • Scholar with Distinction • Includes honors and advanced placement curriculum • Scholar with Honors • Approved college prep courses • Scholar with Expertise • Completion of coursework in one or more areas of focus • Recognition at graduation and notated on official transcript

  17. Seal of Biliteracy • For graduating seniors who have shown proficiency in English as another language or proficiency in a language other than English • The recognition is for a language that is offered as a course with HBUHSD • Student will receive a seal that will be affixed to a recipient’s diploma, will be awarded a chord at graduation and will be noted on the student’s transcript.

  18. Graduation Recognition • Summa cum laude • Overall GPA 4.40 and above • Magna cum laude • Overall GPA 4.00 – 4.39

Additional tips • Be prepared for the transition • E-mail communication is preferred for an efficient and timely response • More rigorous curriculum • Change in environment and campus size • More tasks and activities to juggle • Increased expectation and focus on independent workers and thinkers • Take advantage of the opportunities and enjoy your high school experience
