  15. EXCELLENCE IN RESEARCH AND TEACHING • BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg, newly established on 1 July 2013, is an amalgamation of BTU Cottbus and Lausitz University of Applied Sciences. It offers everything its two predecessor institutions offered yet is also developing completely new profiles. Where research and technology transfer are concerned, we greatly value our cooperation with other universities and non-university based research institutions, regional small and medium-sized businesses and also major, international corporations. Our university has initiated many measures aimed at keeping well-qualified people in the region. One of the most important of these measures is the expansion of our dual education degree course programme initiated in 2015. The university also supports start-up efforts. Respective assistance is offered in the form of institutional measures. Young start-ups create new impulses for the regional economy, and inspire modern forms of cooperation. 27. LEISUREAND CULTURAL ACTIVITY POSSIBILITIES Cottbus In a former Diesel power plant from 1928 lies the Cottbus Art Museum for contemporary art since 2008. The extensive collections can be seen in continual exhibitions. The converted power plant site in Amtsteich offers a very unique charm. The Cottbus Staatstheater (State Theater) offers sophisticated repertoire from concerts to opera. Its ensemble is well known nationwide. This Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) style building by the architect Sehring in 1908 was renovated in 2008 and has retained its original interior design. Something unique is the Eastern European Film Festival held every year in November that turns Cottbus into a metropolis for filmmakers. A student culture and bar scene around campus and in the nearby Cottbus Altstadt (old town) offers a special atmosphere. BTU’s collegiate sports programme is well known for its diverse offers, which fit very well for many students along side their studies. Today it is a theater for everyone. Between Berlin and Dresden lies a new unique waterscape, the “Lausitzer Seenland” (Lusatian Lake District). For several years, the former surface mining landscape is getting a new look with deep blue splashes of color. A completely new landscape is developing, which will become the largest contiguous lake district in Europe with a total of 23 large lakes. The indoor ski slope “Snowtropolis” provides winter sport lovers the opportunity for winter sport and other fun activities all year round in an ice-cold atmosphere. There one can find a 130-meter long slope for skiing and snowboarding fans alike.
