Linear Optimization to Improve Sky Cover Forecasting

Defining sky cover as the expected amount of opaque clouds covering the sky, meteorologists aim to enhance forecasting accuracy by addressing limitations in numerical weather prediction (NWP) methods and satellite-based techniques. The study compares how cloud scenes are represented in NWP models and National Digital Forecast Database (NDFD), and explores the predictive skill of NWP model cloud fields. Linear optimization is proposed as a solution to minimize the difference between human-produced sky cover forecasts and NWP model outputs, with a focus on improving radiative transparency considerations.
