  2. Refreshing Your Mind!!! • 4/5 + 3/6= • 8/9- 3/8= • 3/7* 4/8= • 4/5+3/6 = 4*6/5*6 + 3*5/6*5= 24/30 + 15/30= 39/30= 1 9/30= 1 3/10. • 8/9 – 3/8= 8*8/9*8 – 3*9/8*9= 64/72 – 27/72= 37/72 • 3/7*4/8=3*8/7*8 ₓ 4*7/8*7= 24/56 * 28/56= 672/56 = 12/56= 3/14

  3. Introduction: • Hello my name is Heaven Lipford and I would like to tell you a little bit more about myself. I like to read , write, and sometimes study math. Today we are going to learn how to divide mixed numbers, whole numbers, and fractions so that later on in life you would already be prepared.

  4. Vocabulary Word Corner!!! • Reciprocal. The reciprocal of a fraction is the fraction with the numerator and the denominator interchanged. So basically all you have to do is turn the fraction upside down. Ex 1. ¾ is changed to 4/3 Ex 2. 7/8 is changed to 8/7 Ex 3. ½ is changed to 2/1

  5. Dividing Fractions !!! • To divide fractions you would have to turn the second fraction into a reciprocal. Next,all you have to do is multiply to numerators with the numerators. Same thing goes for the denominators. Lastly, now that you’ve got your answer , you have to see if the fraction can be reduced. If the fraction can be reduced then reduce it. • EX: 2/3 ÷ 4/5 = 2/3 * 5/4 = 2 * 5 = 10 = 5 3 * 4 = 12 =6 Answer : 5/6 • Ex. 1/8 ÷ ¼ =1/8* 4/1= 1 * 4 = 4= 1 • 8*1 = 8 = 2 Answer: 1/2 • Ex. 1/2 ÷ 2/5 = ½* 5/2= 1* 5= 5 2*2=4 Answer: 1 ¼

  6. DividingFractions by a Whole Number • To divide fractions by whole numbers you have to first turn that whole number into a fraction ( so, 2 will become 2/1). Next you change the division sign into a multiplication sign. Then you turn the fraction behind the multiplication sign into a reciprocal. After you’ve done that you have to multiply both fractions . Lastly, when you have your answer you reduce it to the simplest form. Ex 1. 2/9÷2= 2/9 ÷ 2/1 = 2/9 * ½ = 2/18= 1/9 Ex 2. ½ ÷ 3= ½ ÷ 3/1 = 1/2 * 1/3 = 1/6 ( No reducing required)

  7. Dividing Mixed Numbers • To divide mixed numbers you have to turn the mixed number into a improper fraction. Once you do that you have to change the division sign into a multiplication sign. After that you would have to turn the fraction after the multiplication sign into a reciprocal. Now all you need to do is multiply the fractions and reduce the answer. • Ex 1. 7 ÷ 3 ½= 7/1 ÷ 7/2= 7/1 * 7/2= 14/7 = 2 • Ex 2. 6 2/8 ÷ 3 5/9 = 50/8 * 9/ 32= 450/256 = 1 194/252 =1 97/ 128

  8. Homework • 1/3 ÷ 1/5 = • 3 1/3 ÷ 2 1/5 = • 1/2÷ 6/10 = • 2/3 ÷ 7 = • 3/5÷ 2/4 =

  9. Homework Answers • 1) 1/3÷1/5 =1/3 * 5/1 = 1 x 5= 5 • 3 x 1=3 = Answer: 1 2/3 • 2) 3 1/3 ÷ 2 1/5= 10/3 * 11/5 = 10 * 5 = 50 • 3 x 11=33 = Answer: 117/33 • 3) ½ ÷ 6/10 = ½ * 10/6 =1 x 10 = 10 =5 • 2 x 6 =12= 6 = Answer: 5/6 • 4) 2/3 ÷ 7 =2/3 * 7/1 =2 x 1 = 2 • 3 x 7 = 21 = Answer: 2/21 • 5) 3/5÷ 2/4 =3/5 * 4/2 = 3 x 4 = 12 = 6 • 5 x 2 = 10 = 5 = Answer: 1 1/5

  10. Conclusion In real life situations you use it to: • To split a gallon of orange juice between 6 people. • Also, to split a candy bar between 2 people • Cut an 8 1/2 x 11 piece of paper into 4 equal pieces
