  2. Cognitive Learning Theory • Learning theory that tries to explain human behavior by understanding the thought process. • Assumed that humans make choices that make most sense to them. • How people think.

  3. Information processing • Commonly used to describe the mental process for the Cognitive Learning theory.

  4. Jean Piaget • Born in Switzerland in 1896. • Received his doctoral degree at age 22 • Began a career that would have a profound impact on both psychology and education. • Piaget developed an interest in the intellectual development of children leading him to the Cognitive Learning Theory.

  5. Behavioral Learning Theory • It is said that as we learn, we alter the way we perceive our environment, the way we interpret the incoming stimuli, and therefore the way we interact, or behave.

  6. John B. Watson • (1878-1958) was the first to study how the process of learning affects our behavior, and he formed the school of thought known as Behaviorism.

  7. How do these theories impact teaching/training? • In order to effectively educate/teach/train, we must be able to understand how the person learns. • Learning is not quite a one size fits all, there are different styles of learning. • Depending on how the learner behaves, we’ll be able to determine whether they understood the material or not.

  8. Adult Education Environment Cognitive Learning theory: • Most adults have a lot on their minds all the time. • Understanding how they think will be highly important on developing the proper lesson plan for them.

  9. Adult Education Environment Behavioral Learning Theory: • Based on a change in knowledge through controlled stimulus/response conditioning. • The instructor must demonstrate knowledge, then observe, measure, and modify behavioral changes in specified direction.
