  2. Baptism and Faith • We are saved by faith, Jn. 3:16; Heb. 11:6 • When does faith save? Jn. 3:36 (NASV – “who does not obey”); Heb. 11:7,30 • Baptism is an act of faith, Acts 2:37,38 • Mk. 16:16: two conditions for salvation; one for condemnation

  3. Baptism and Grace • Eph. 2:8,9 – salvation is by grace • Eph. 5:25,26 – by washing of water by the word • Grace (17 times in Romans) – also teaches baptism (6:3,4; Gal. 3:26,27)

  4. The Word of Grace • “By the word” (Eph. 5:26) must be the right subject, action, and purpose. • 2 Kgs. 5:13,14 - right person, action, place • When he submitted to God’s word – he was cleansed. We must submit to “the word of His grace” (Acts 20:32).

  5. Baptism & Works • Eph. 2:8,9 – excludes “works” therefore baptism is not necessary.” • Gal. 5:19-21 – baptism is a “work” – all who are baptized will not be saved! • Jn. 6:29 – Faith is “the work of God” – therefore it is not necessary! • Neither faith, nor baptism is the kind of work in Eph. 2:8,9 (Jas. 2:20,26)

  6. Not Works but Washing • Titus 3:5 God: Not by works of But by washing of righteousness regeneration Acts 22:16; Eph. 5:26 Men: Not by works of Nor by washing of righteousness regeneration

  7. Baptism & Blood • Heb. 9:13,14; 10:22 (Num. 19:1-5,9,13) • The blood purges our conscience • Rev. 1:5 – “To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood.” • Acts 22:16 – “Arise and be baptized and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.”

  8. Appeal for a Good Conscience • 1 Pet. 3:20,21 – “…the answer of a good conscience” (KJV; NKJV). • “1 Pet. 3:21, is not, as in the A.V., an ‘answer.’ It was used by the Greeks in a legal sense, as a demand or appeal” (Vine). • “Interrogation” (ASV); “Appeal” (NASV, RSV, Living Bible, Williams, Beck). • The good conscience follows obedience.

  9. Conclusion • “It makes no sense” (Heb. 11:30) • The command tests faith – Do I believe what Christ said, because He said it? • Archaeologist found baptismal font in form of a cross. He was puzzled! • 1 Cor. 1:10-13
