  1. Weed Control In Organic Crops By Benedict T. Palen, Jr. Along with crop fertility, one of the biggest issues with organic farming is weed control.   The options that are not synthetic herbicides are limited, and the cost of alternatives can be high, with sometimes questionable effectiveness.

  2. Weed Control In Organic Crops By Benedict T. Palen, Jr. There is no one size fits all approach, but in situations where you have wheat or some other small grain crop in the rotation, there is a technique that can be used to accomplish three purposes—weed control for the following crop, preservation of soil moisture, and reduction of soil erosion.

  3. Weed Control In Organic Crops By Benedict T. Palen, Jr. The technique is the use of a Shelbourne stripper header for harvesting wheat and other small grain crops.   The stripper header leaves virtually all of the stalks standing, so instead of the typical stubble height of, say, 10 inches, there can be around 28-30 inches of standing stubble post harvest.  Take a look at the website for photos of the Shelbourne. The density of the stubble, and its height, will serve as natural suppressants of weed seed germination.  In winter, the stubble will trap more snow than would be the case with stubble from a conventional combine header.

Palen, Jr. At planting time for the crop that follows the wheat, the ground will be mellow because of the residue cover, and stored soil moisture levels will be greater than would be the case with other conventional methods. Many of my friends who are no till farmers tell me that, after trying the stripper header, they will never go back to a conventional combine header. The extra moisture stored in the soil, by itself, is a strong inducement, but for an organic farmer, the benefit of weed control is of equal significance.
