Have you ever come across an interesting topic post on a social media networking site, only to scroll down through it because it's actually a long block of text? You can probably relate to how boring that moment can be. But even if you can't, it goes to say that today's generation strongly adheres to the acronym KISS: Keep It Short and Simple. 1. Image Formats 101 to Spruce Up Your Website!

  2. So what is the solution to satisfy today's viewers of TL;DR (Too Long; Didn't Read) loyalists? Images. That's right; images go a long way in entertaining your audiences. After all, in fast-paced platforms like social media, there are so many content that an average passerby just doesn't have enough time to spend reading through long walls of texts. Most will only primarily browse through images because, as they say, a photo conveys thousands of words.

  3. SO, ARE YOU READY TO GEAR UP YOUR IMAGES? HERE ARE SOME GUIDELINES TO HELP YOU OUT. RASTER VS. VECTOR Generally, all pictures found online are raster images and are made up of fixed pixels that aren't designed to be transformed. Compared to vector images that are made of formulated shapes, raster images distort when fitted in proportions they aren't supposed to fill. Vectors, on the other hand, will always retain their quality when resized.

  4. SO, ARE YOU READY TO GEAR UP YOUR IMAGES? HERE ARE SOME GUIDELINES TO HELP YOU OUT. LOSSY VS. LOSSLESS As for compression, every image falls in one of either categories: lossy or lossless. As their names suggest, lossy compression loses some of the image's data and therefore produces an image of lower quality, while lossless renders pixel-by-pixel and therefore saves in high quality. The catch is that lossless requires a lot more space compared to lossy, which in turn saves a lot of bytes.

  5. IMAGE FILE FORMATS JPG GIF PNG JPG or Joint Photographic Experts Group is the most widely accepted format for images and is very web- friendly. However, while it can contain as much as 16 million different colors, its downside is its tendency to lose much information, which means that it is not suitable for photographs with solid shapes and sharp edges. Additionally, JPG cannot be animated. GIF or Graphics Interchange Format may be considered out of date compared to other formats, however it can perform modest animations. It also supports transparency, but it also limits graphics to only 256 colors. On the positive side, this format features a lossless quality. PNG or Portable Network Graphics is an open source file format created specifically to be patent-free. It is one of the best formats to be used for editing processes and also features lossless compression. While it produces smaller file sizes compared to GIF, it still goes to say that PNG requires extremely large spaces. Like JPG, it cannot support animation, but unlike JPG, PNG can come with transparency.

  6. IMAGE FILE FORMATS So, there you have it! You've been toured through the basics of the world of images, which can hopefully help you out in choosing the perfect photo for your post. Go out there and amaze your audiences with your shiny, spruced up images! TIFF TIFF or Tagged Image File Format is the king of raster images. It can be lossy or lossless, so it's one of the best choices for printing as it has the option to produce high-quality images with all the information retained. On the downside, because it stores all the information, it also requires extremely large spaces and demands a longer transfer time.
