  2. Simple Forms (Le preposizioni semplici) • The most common Italian prepositions are: • a (at, to) • con (with) • da (from) • di (of) • fra/tra (between, among) • in (in, to) • per (for, through) • su (on)

  3. Articulated Forms (Le preposizioni articolate) • When a, da, di, in, and su precede the definite article, the preposition and the article combine into special forms called articulated prepositions – see chart. • Di and in change form, becoming de- and ne-. • In everyday language, con, per, tra, and fra never combine with articles.

  4. Uses Prepositions are used in many idiomatic expressions, which must often be learned individually. Here are examples: • Place • A is generally used before cities. -L’anno prossimo andiamo a Vienna e a Praga. -Quelle ragazze abitano a Roma. • In is used with singular, feminine, unmodified geographical names. In all other cases, use in + article. Andiamo in Italia quest’estate. Andiamo nell’Italia meridionale. • In alone is used most often before unmodified places, rooms, or buildings: in bagno, in biblioteca, in chiesa, in giardino, in montagna. (Exceptions: a casa, al mare, a teatro.) If the place or room is modified, use in + article. Andiamo in banca a cambiare i soldi. Andiamo nella Banca Nazionale.

  5. Uses (cont’d.) • Time • Before months, use either a or in. Before seasons, use either in or di (d’). a febbraio; in agosto in primavera; d’inverno • Before hours of the day, use the articulated forms of a (at) or da (from), in the feminine plural. Quando apre il museo? Dalle nove alle due. EXCEPTIONS: a mezzogiorno, a mezzanotte, all’una. • The following expressions are often used after the hour: di mattina, di sera, di notte, but del pomeriggio. • Fra (tra) + time expression means in (within) an hour (minute, week, etc.) when referring to a future event. L’aereo parte fra un’ora. • Da is used with verbs in the present tense to mean for or since. -Da quanto tempo viaggiate insieme? How long have you guys been traveling together? -Viaggiamo insieme da un paio di mesi. (dall’anno scorso). We’ve been traveling together for a couple of months (since last year).

  6. Uses (cont’d.) • Transportation: Common Expressions • Non è facile fare il giro di Perugia in bici! • È bello andare in barca sul lago. • In Italia preferisci viaggiare in treno o in macchina? • Nel Wyoming è bello andare a cavallo. • È facile andare a piedi dalla stazione al SVHS.
