  2. PSTN = Public Switched Telephone Network • Although the PSTN is effective and does a good job at what it was built to do (switch voice calls), many businesses are striving to change it to a new network whereby voice rides on top of a data network.

  3. Drawbacks to the PSTN • Data has overtaken voice as the primary traffic on many networks built for voice. • The PSTN cannot create and deploy features quickly enough. Only the venders of the equipment could develop the applications for that equipment. • Data, Voice, & Video cannot converge on the inflexible PSTN as currently built. • Wasted bandwidth using a 64k connection.

  4. VoIP = Voice over IP • Provides an advanced digital communications network that bypasses the traditional public switched telephone system and uses the Internet to transmit voice communication.

  5. VoIP Signaling Protocol • H.323 - ITU standard for transmitting audio video and data across an IP network.

  6. IP Telephony • IP Telephony is the technology which allows for data, voice, and video to be transmitted over a single, IP based network infrastructure.

  7. IP Telephony Pilot Project • In the 4th Q 2000, Network Services, in cooperation with Telecommunications and OIR have begun to implement IP Telephony on the UF campus. Cisco’s AVVID (Architecture for Voice, Video and Integrated Data) family of products were chosen because of their scalability and availability in the current market.
