  1. Complete the following friction problems. Draw a force diagram for each problem and show all your work. 1 A man pushes a heavy crate over a floor. The man pushes downward and forward so his push makes an angle of 30° with the horizontal. The mass of the crate is 60kg, and the coefficient of sliding friction is μ =.5. What force must the man exert to keep the crate moving at uniform velocity? 2 The coefficient of static friction of the rubber of an automobile tire on a street is μ =.9. What is the steepest slope of a street at which the automobile can rest without slipping? 3 A jetliner has a takeoff mass of 75,000kg. It reaches its takeoff speed of 82m/s in 35s. What is the thrust of the engines if the coefficient of friction between the tires and road is μ =.02? (Neglect drag). 4 A 50,000kg locomotive is traveling at 10m/s when its engine and brakes fail. How far will the locomotive roll before it comes to a stop if the coefficient of friction between the spinning steel wheels and the rail is μ =.002? (Neglect drag)
