  3. We wondered if we could… • Test less • Teach more • Use assessment to better guide teaching decisions

  4. In the spirit of collaboration, the Interest Based Problem Solving (IBPS) team directed a study group to explore the issues around assessment. The work of the study group centered around the guiding question… How can assessment policies and practices best serve the instructional needs of students and help improve the teaching and learning processes in our district?

  5. Study Team Recommendations: • Establish a comprehensive, coherent and continuous assessment system based upon research • Provide related professional development • Integrate technology • Provide continuous review • Rebuild the PUSD assessment system

  6. The Good News …. The research showed that: The best assessment is closest to the learner and closest to the teaching moment Therefore… To be most effective, a district assessment system is founded upon the assessments for learning generated from classroom teachers

  7. In order to rebuild the PUSD Assessment System… … all District mandated assessments are suspended for the 2003-2004 school year … teachers will determine what works best in supporting and monitoring student learning
