Teaching Quality Initiative • Traditional pedagogy course structure eliminated and competencies developed in intensive institute and on-site residency in the schools • Modular approach (PBL) rather than 3 credit hour classes • Competencies demonstrated through valid and reliable assessments • Strong partnerships with school districts essential and must be developed/Local P16 Councils • Cohort of students placed in a school with master teachers and university faculty Tennessee Board of Regents PBL/Redesign Meeting, 10.21.08

TBR Pilots - Update • June 2008-August 2008: • Meeting of ETSU and MTSU redesign pilot teams and team leaders • Development of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) modules • All six TBR institutions established PBL writing teams • July 2008, teams attended PBL workshop conducted by Dr. Michael Hosokawa from the College of Medicine at University of Missouri-Columbia • Teams are now writing problems/cases based on the Tennessee Teacher Competencies/Characteristics Tennessee Board of Regents PBL/Redesign Meeting, 10.21.08

TBR Pilots - Update • September 2008-October 2008: • Begin work with TEA on TQI teacher recognition program (professionalization initiative) • Met with Dr. Earl Wiman, TEA President, to identify teams of teachers who will develop the evidence and rubrics, portfolios for the pilot and conduct the peer/blind review evaluation of the portfolios. • Meeting of all TBR university Redesign teams and PBL teams • Initiation of the pilots (ETSU and MTSU) with the cohorts Tennessee Board of Regents PBL/Redesign Meeting, 10.21.08

TBR Pilots – Update • September 2008-October 2008: • Modeling pilot • September 4, 2008, TTU hosted a Modeling Kick-Off Event with special guest speaker, Dr. George Nelson, former NASA astronaut and Associate Professor of Physics at Western Washington University • Teams of faculty in Arts & Sciences and COE have begun meeting to develop small-scale interventions for implementation in the spring. TBR Pilots - Update • November 2008-July 2009 • Development of pilot evaluations and performance assessments (TQI Assessment and Evaluation Team) • Teacher recognition program piloted in partnership with TEA (Professionalization initiative). • Multiple sessions with all TBR university redesign teams and PBL writing teams • Administration of pilot performance post-assessments (TBR Assessment and Evaluation Team) • Final reports from pilots (ETSU and MTSU) Tennessee Board of Regents PBL/Redesign Meeting, 10.21.08

TQI Implementation • Summer 2008: • initiation of pilots at East Tennessee State University and Middle Tennessee State University with cohorts • establishment of TQI Research Center • Fall 2008-Spring 2009: • identification of TQI campus coordinators • establish Problem-based learning writing teams • TQI campus redesign teams • initiation of Modeling of Evidence-Based Best Practices Pilot at Tennessee Technological University • meetings to allow all six university chief academic officers, college of education deans, TQI campus coordinators, TQI campus redesign teams, Problem-based learning team leaders and faculty to network, dialog and plan campus implementation of the Tennessee Board of Regents teacher education redesign which is comprised of the following components: (a.) problem-based learning, (b.) school-based residency, (c.) close partnerships with schools and (d.) partnerships with Arts and Sciences. TQI Implementation • Fall 2008-Spring 2009: • meetings with the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education and local and regional TN P-16 Council Contacts • development and approval of Tennessee Board Regents Teaching Quality Initiative Guidelines that will facilitate the TQI teacher education redesign on each campus • interim reports from pilots • establishment of a TQI Assessment Taskforce • development of a TQI website and DVD and Problem-Based Learning training DVDs Tennessee Board of Regents PBL/Redesign Meeting, 10.21.08

TQI Implementation • Summer 2009: • meeting of university Chief Academic Officers, College of Education Deans and TQI Campus Coordinators • meeting of all Community College Chief Academic Officers and one Associate of Science in Teaching Degree representative form each campus • PBL faculty development training provided by Dr. Michael Hosokawa, University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine Tennessee Board of Regents PBL/Redesign Meeting, 10.21.08

TQI Implementation • Fall 2009-Spring 2010: • fall retreat - meetings to allow college of education and arts and sciences deans, TQI campus coordinators, Problem-based learning team leaders and faculty to network, dialog and plan campus implementation of the Tennessee Board of Regents teacher education redesign • establishment of a TQI Assessment System • initiation of Assessment pilots • initiation of PBL pilots on six university campus • ongoing faculty development Tennessee Board of Regents PBL/Redesign Meeting, 10.21.08
