What is OTTED? • Revenue-oriented service center • help faculty identify, protect, and commercialize UH IP for the public good • help build UH research enterprise • E.g. - faculty recruitment/retention, new funding opportunities • generate licensing income • Support State economic development initiatives • through licensing, especially to startups • growth of UH research programs • special programs

IP in Sponsored Research • Ownership of IP follows inventorship • Sponsor gets 1st right to negotiate license to UH’s rights in new IP • No pre-negotiated licensing terms • No restriction on publication • although short delays are usually permissible for preview and filing of patent application(s) • Other important terms • Indemnification • Disclaimer of warranties • Payment schedules – generally require payment in advance • Industry consortia may have membership fees and additional terms

  9. UH Business Plan Competition • $20,000 in additional prize money • Only winning plans based on licensable UH technologies are eligible to receive tech transfer prize • Prize money can only be used to help advance commercialization of the technology.
