Theoretical Framework for the C2C Network Nadine Ghanem - Dirk Le Roy (Sustenuto) Peter Stouthuysen – Karl Vrancken (VITO)
Objective of the Cradle to Cradle framework • To explain the common vision that governs the network and that will be expressed in the action plans • Provide common introductory chapter for each of the perspective studies - guidanceon “What could be the role of Cradle to Cradle in relation to: • Building • Spatial development • Industry • Governance
Team • Core team: • VITO: sustainable materials management and C2C experts • Sustenuto: C2C consultant and strategic C2C partner • Sounding board • Karel Van Acker, KULeuven, Materials Research Centre • Douglas Mulhall, C2C Academic Chair at DRIFT, Erasmus University Rotterdam
Approach • Description of C2C concept, principles, applications and terminology • Discuss at Target Area Workshops • Outcome is a general introduction to C2C • Resume of C2C theoretical framework is used in each of the four perspective studies (Chapter 1 of the perspective study)

General theoretical framework:Introduction to Cradle to Cradle • Background • The Cradle to Cradle concept • The Cradle to Cradle principles • Cradle to Cradle applications
General framework - Background Source: Sustenuto, KUL, Wuppertal Institut (2010). Sustainable Materials Management for Europe. From efficiency to effectiveness.
General framework - Background • Growing awareness something has to change: • Last decades growing welfare but well-being? • What about next decades? • Action is needed and is also taken: • initally defensive(cost reduction waste, compliance with law) • collaborative (preventive approach) • active approach (product responsibility, life cycle analysis, eco- efficiency) Will thisbeenough?
General framework – Cradle to Cradle concept • Need for a goal – where do we want to go to and how we can achieve this? • Braungart and McDonough introduce the Cradle to Cradle concept • Broader framework: eco-effectiveness Eco-effectiveness Eco-efficiency “Doing the right things” “Doing the things right” “maximise positive “minimise negative effects” effects”
From Efficiency to Effectiveness Source: “Sustainable Materials Management for Europe, from Efficiency to Effectiveness”, Sustenuto, KU Leuven, Wuppertal Institute, March 2010
General framework - Principles Act as nature • Waste equals food • Use current solar income • Celebrate diversity
C2C Network – Limburg principles • Limburg principles are a regional interpretation of C2C • C2C Network is inspired by ‘Limburg Principles’ • We are native to our place • Our waste is our food • The sun is our income • Our air, soil and water are healthy • We design enjoyment for all generations • We provide enjoyable mobility for all
General framework - Applications • Products, processes, buildings, business models, spatial areas,… are inspired by the Cradle to Cradle concept and its principles • Only for products is there currently a validation tool: • C2C™-certificate – safe, healthy and reusable materials • The C2C Network project ambition is to understand the potential role of Cradle to Cradle for applications in: • Industry • Buildings • Spatial area • And role of governance
Cradle to Cradle and Industry • 3 levels of applying Cradle to Cradle to industry • Product – 3 C2C principles, human and environmental health criteria • Supply Chain – knowledge of materials, reverse logistics • Business Processes – innovative, sales to lease
