  1. NutritionAim: How do different living organisms obtain food?

  2. Nutrition • Processes by which organisms obtain and use the nutrients required for maintaining life

  3. Modes of Nutrition • Ways of obtaining and using nutrients Nutrition Autotrophic nutrition Heterotrophic nutrition Herbivore Carnivore Omnivore Decomposer

  4. Autotrophic Nutrition A. Carry out by Autotrophs Autotrophs: are living things that can synthesize their own food from inorganic compounds and a usable energy source/sunlight Trees Flower Algae

  5. Heterotrophic Nutrition • Carry out by Heterotrophs • Heterotrophs: are living organisms that can NOT synthesize their own food and are dependent on other organisms for their food Caterpillar Lion Monkey

  6. Types of Heterotrophs • Herbivores • Feed on plants only

  7. Types of Heterotrophs • Carnivores • Feed on animals only

  8. Types of Heterotrophs • Omnivores • Feed on both plants and animals

  9. Types of Heterotrophs • Decomposers • Organisms feed on dead organisms or non-living organic matter • (e.g. fungi, bacteria) Fungi Bacteria

  10. Importance of Decomposers • As decomposers • Allow essential materials (e.g. C, N) to be recycled in the ecosystem

  11. Practice • Correctly categorize the following organism’s mode of nutrition and explain why. Which mode of nutrition am I? • Answer: • Heterotrophic nutrition • Specifically, Carnivore • Why? Because I only eat meat.

  12. Practice • Correctly categorize the following organism’s mode of nutrition Which mode of nutrition am I?

  13. Practice • Correctly categorize the following organism’s mode of nutrition Which mode of nutrition am I?

  14. Practice • Correctly categorize the following organism’s mode of nutrition Which mode of nutrition am I?

  15. Practice • Correctly categorize the following organism’s mode of nutrition Which mode of nutrition am I?

  16. Practice • Correctly categorize the following organism’s mode of nutrition Which mode of nutrition am I?

  17. Practice • Correctly categorize the following organism’s mode of nutrition Which mode of nutrition am I?

  18. Practice • Correctly categorize the following organism’s mode of nutrition Which mode of nutrition am I?

  19. Practice • Correctly categorize the following organism’s mode of nutrition Which mode of nutrition am I?

  20. Critical Thinking • How are autotrophs different than heterotrophs?

  21. Critical Thinking • Which type of nutrition, autotrophic nutrition or heterotrophic nutrition, plays a more important role in an ecosystem? Explain. Must provide 3 reasons to support your claim.
