  2. Eddie, the tallest man in the world, suffered from an over-secretion of a pituitary hormone his entire life. Eddie died in early adulthood due to the effects of this condition. Name Eddie’s condition and explain its cause. Scenario #11

  3. Pituitary gland • It is an endocrine gland about the size of a pea and weighing 0.5 g (0.02 oz.) in humans. • It hangs by a stalk from the inferior surface of the hypothalamus. • The pituitary gland secretes hormones that regulate homeostasis.

  4. Posterior Pituitary • It is not an endocrine gland because it doesn’t make the peptide hormones it releases. • Oxytocin: Stimulates powerful contractions of the uterine muscle during labor, sex, and breast feeding. • Antidiuretic Hormone: Inhibits/ Prevents urine production.

  5. Anterior pituitary • Its hormones are proteins, act through second-messenger systems, & are regulated by hormonal stimuli/ negative feedback. • GH, prolactin, adrenocorticotropic, thyroid-stimulating, follicle-stimulating, luteinizing, interstitial cell-stimulating

Eddie’s condition & its cause • Gigantism: Is a condition characterized by excessive growth and height significantly above average. • This condition is caused by over-production of growth hormone. • Growth Hormone plays an important role in determining final body size. (Robert Wadlow; the tallest man known to have lived (8 ft 11 in) with his father, Harold Wadlow (5 ft 11 1/2 in)

  7. Many of those who have been identified with gigantism have suffered from multiple health problems involving their circulatory or skeletal system. The person may suffer from internal and external problems. Death may occur from these complications. Complications

  8. It is a medical condition, caused by problems arising in the pituitary gland, in which the body does not produce enough growth hormone. Psychological symptoms include poor memory, social withdrawal, and depression. While physical symptoms may include loss of strength, stamina, and musculature. Growth hormone deficiency
