  1. Project proposal to the ESIN Board, 2014-04-01 Sustainable Island Mobility Plans Sustainable Island Mobility Plans

  2. Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans The European Sustainable Urban Mobility Platform (http://www.mobilityplans.eu/ ) supports local authorities across Europe in developing mobility plans. It is financed by the European Union under the IEE program. In 2014, a European Platform on Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans will be set up to coordinate EU cooperation on developing the concept and relevant tools further; provide a one-stop shop; and expand the present website into a virtual knowledge and competence centre. This platform will support the further development of the concept and the tools required for its successful application by local planning authorities, by coordinating all relevant Commission-supported activities in this area and fostering broader exchange. Sustainable Island Mobility Plans

  3. Core Concept of a SUMP Focuses on people. Primary objectives: improved quality of life, sustainability, economic viability, health and environmental quality. Interdisciplinary planning teams. Short and Medium Term delivery plan but nested in a Long Term Vision and Strategy. Related not to an administrative area but to a functioning area. Planned with the involvement of stakeholders using a transparent and participatoryapproach. Regular monitoring and evaluation of impact. Sustainable Island Mobility Plans

  4. Sustainable Island Mobility Plans Compared to cities, islands need slightly different planning tools and templates because: - mobility on an island is limited by natural boundaries (the sea); - islands are vulnerable systems unable to support themselves with energy, freshwater and waste handling, especially in high season; - islands require sea-voyages which gives typically 25% higher costs for goods, energy, building and services; - island dualism: in winter a limited number of residents, in summer a sharply increased number of people with subsequent energy, traffic, waste and water consumption. - - - Checked with SUMP office (Mr.Jeuring) on 2014-03-27: very positive reaction, suggests to go ahead - Sustainable Island Mobility Plans

  5. Project Idea Islands within the ESIN federation, who have a high degree of season-related mobility problems, apply for IEE funding to jointly develop local mobility plans in a partnership. The results of the project would be: 1. A document: a Sustainability Island Mobility Plan for each of the partners 2. A process: the development of the plan with a high degree of citizen involvement on each of the partner islands 3. A local event/conference on each of the partner islands, presenting the plan 4. A documented process with tools and templates for further use within ESIN Sustainable Island Mobility Plans

  6. Citizen Involvement An important part of the project would be the citizen involvement, created by a designated group of citizens (200-400 people?) on each island, that will: Be engaged in (a) the beginning of the project to give their view on the mobility situation, (b) in the middle of the project to give their ideas on what could be done, and (c) at the end of the project to give their opinion on the mobility plan; Be using a smartphone tool that can track their sustainable actions in a very accurate way, be linked with Facebook and also provide support for contactless payments of public transports.
