The Research Excellence Framework (REF) is the successor to the Research Assessment Exercise, aiming to evaluate the quality of research in UK higher education institutions. REF informs the allocation of approximately £1.76 billion per annum in government funding. The framework assesses research outputs (60%), environment (15%), and impact (25%). Institutions select staff and submit case studies to demonstrate the impact of their research. This document outlines key proposals, consultation details, and further resources for more in-depth understanding of the REF process.

Outputs • 3 or 4 per person submitted? • Double-weighting - how defined? • Use of bibliometrics in some areas
Environment • Management • Resourcing • Engagement
Impact • Pilot underway • Assess at level of submitted unit • Impact arising from excellent research • Case studies – what is the impact, how did the unit contribute, evidence of underpinning research • Impact statement – at level of submitted unit
