  1. The aim of this session is to introduce you to Year 6 and the way in which we promote learning.

  2. This year our topics are; Dreams and Wishes (Biographies) Changing Times (Britain Since 1948) Feel the Force, Awesome Aztecs, Raging Rivers Scrumdiddlyumptious (Roald Dahl)

  3. Monitoring learning All children have Learning Journey Booklets for Maths Reading and Writing. These have been designed by staff at Haylands to enable all children to take a greater responsibility for their learning. The booklets contain levelled statements to allow children to assess which level they are working at and also to identify what they need to do in order to make progress. When delivering lessons teacher will explain the objectives of the lesson to the children and the pupils then know which level they are working towards.

  4. For example... Our aim today is to understand the genre of biographical writing and to identify the features of biographies. We will achieve our aim by reading a selection of biographies and noticing their special features. Reading AF4 ·Level 3a I can identify the structures and language features of different non-fiction genres ·Level 4b I can recognise language that is a feature of a particular genre. ·Level 5c I can comment on the genre-specific language an author has used to present information in a non-fiction text. Children then know what they need to do in order to succeed.

  5. We questioned the children about the skills that they thought were essentials for "Successful Learning." The eight characteristics that they identified are being promoted throughout the school.

  6. UNIFORM Children should wear black or grey trousers or skirts, white shirt, school tie and a Haylands jumper or cardigan which can be purchased from Kids and Co in Ryde High Street. PE kit should be a white t-shirt red shorts and trainers. For colder days, children can wear a black tracksuit (not their school jumper.) Please ensure that all uniform is named so that it can be easily identified and returned. We do expect all of our students to look smart in order to reflect a 'professional' attitude to learning. Therefore we ask that top buttons are done up, ties are tied correctly and shirts are neatly tucked in. Please ensure that footwear is appropriate and that it promotes healthy foot development. We do not allow trainers or boots to be worn in school.

  7. Finally, please feel free to chat to your child's class teacher if you have concerns, questions or, indeed if you want to tell us that we're doing a good job! Whilst we do operate an 'open door policy' we both have after school commitments to clubs and meetings. Please write a note in your child's diary or phone the office for a chat or to make an appointment. The class teacher is always the first port of call.
