  1. Make The Lord Your Supreme Treasure Psalm 16

  2. Psalm 16:1-4 A Mikhtam of David. 1 Preserve me, O God, for I take refuge in You. 2 I said to the LORD, “You are my Lord; I have no good besides You.” 3 As for the saints who are in the earth, They are the majestic ones in whom is all my delight. 4 The sorrows of those who have bartered for another god will be multiplied; I shall not pour out their drink offerings of blood, Nor will I take their names upon my lips.

  3. Psalm 16:5-8 5 The LORD is the portion of my inheritance and my cup; You support my lot. 6 The lines have fallen to me in pleasant places; Indeed, my heritage is beautiful to me. 7 I will bless the LORD who has counseled me; Indeed, my mind instructs me in the night. 8 I have set the LORD continually before me; Because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.

  4. Psalm 16:9-11 9 Therefore my heart is glad and my glory rejoices; My flesh also will dwell securely. 10 For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol; Nor will You allow Your Holy One to undergo decay. 11 You will make known to me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; In Your right hand there are pleasures forever.

  5. Big Idea When you make the Lord your supreme treasure, you will be satisfied with pleasures now and forever in Him.

Make the Lord Your Refuge and Savior (16:1). “Preserve me, O God, for I take refuge in You.” Colossians 1:17 “…all things hold together.” Numbers 35:9-28 – Cities of Refuge Cities of Refuge are a picture of Jesus Christ

  8. Make The Lord Your Supreme Treasure I. Make The Lord Your Supreme Treasure(16:1-6) B. Make the Lord Your Lord and Your Supreme Good (16:2). “I said to the Lord, ‘You are my Lord; I have no good besides You.” KJV - “my goodness extendeth not to thee.” NKJV - “my goodness is nothing apart from You.” Meaning – God needs none of our good works

  9. Make The Lord Your Supreme Treasure I. Make The Lord Your Supreme Treasure(16:1-6) B. Make the Lord Your Lord and Your Supreme Good (16:2). “I said to the Lord, ‘You are my Lord; I have no good besides You.” Psalm 73:25 “Whom have I in heaven but You? 10. Make The Lord Your Supreme Treasure I. Make The Lord Your Supreme Treasure(16:1-6) B. Make the Lord Your Lord and Your Supreme Good (16:2). “I said to the Lord, ‘You are my Lord; I have no good besides You.” Matthew 13:44-46 “The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in the field, which a man found and hid again; and from joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking fine pearls, and upon finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it.”

  11. Make The Lord Your Supreme Treasure I. Make The Lord Your Supreme Treasure(16:1-6) B. Make the Lord Your Lord and Your Supreme Good (16:2). “I said to the Lord, ‘You are my Lord; I have no good besides You.” Philippians 3:7-8 “But whatever things were gain to me, those things I have counted as loss for the sake of Christ. More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ…”

  12. Make The Lord Your Supreme Treasure I. Make The Lord Your Supreme Treasure(16:1-6) C. Make the Lord the Basis of Your Friendships (16:3). “As for the saints who are in the earth, they are the majestic ones in whom is all my delight.” We should delight in the company of the saints!

  13. Make The Lord Your Supreme Treasure I. Make The Lord Your Supreme Treasure(16:1-6) D. Make the Lord the Exclusive Object of Your Worship (16:4). “The sorrows of those who have bartered for another god will be multiplied; I shall not pour out their drink offerings of blood, nor will I take their names upon my lips.” 1 Corinthians 15:33, “Do not be deceived: ‘Bad company corrupts good morals.’” Do not be partakers in their lifestyles, but be concerned for their souls. Pray for them AND share the gospel.

  14. Make The Lord Your Supreme Treasure I. Make The Lord Your Supreme Treasure(16:1-6) E. Make the Lord Your Present and Eternal Inheritance (16:5-6). “The Lord is the portion of my inheritance and my cup; you support my lot. The lines have fallen to me in pleasant places; indeed, my heritage is beautiful to me.” Ephesians 1:11 “In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to His purpose who works all things after the counsel of His will.” Numbers 18:20, “You shall have no inheritance in their land nor own any portion among them; I am your portion and your inheritance among the sons of Israel.”

  15. John Calvin “None are taught aright in true godliness but those who reckon God alone sufficient for their happiness. For he who has God as his portion is destitute of nothing which is requisite to constitute a happy life.”

  16. Make The Lord Your Supreme Treasure II. You Will Be Satisfied With Present and Eternal Pleasures In Him (16:7-11) David’s point here is not the joy in the gifts from God but the joy in God Himself!

  17. Make The Lord Your Supreme Treasure II. You Will Be Satisfied With Present and Eternal Pleasures In Him (16:7-11) A. You ENJOY His counsel and instruction (16:7). “I will bless the Lord who has counseled me; indeed, my mind instructs me in the night.” “mind” – “kidney” ~ refers to innermost, personal life “night” is plural ~ refers to night after night after night

  18. Make The Lord Your Supreme Treasure II. You Will Be Satisfied With Present and Eternal Pleasures In Him (16:7-11) B. You EXPERIENCE His Stability in Trials (16:8). “I have set the Lord continually before me; because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.” “I will not be shaken” - confidence in the providence of God

  19. Make The Lord Your Supreme Treasure II. You Will Be Satisfied With Present and Eternal Pleasures In Him (16:7-11) C. You EXPERIENCE gladness and joy in His security (16:9). “Therefore my heart is glad and my glory rejoices; my flesh also will dwell securely.” If you are God’s treasure than you are His treasure, and He is not ever going to lose you or cast you aside! So Rejoice!

  20. Make The Lord Your Supreme Treasure II. You Will Be Satisfied With Present and Eternal Pleasures In Him (16:7-11) D. You EXPERIENCE eternal joy and pleasure in God’s presence (16:10-11). “For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol; nor will You allow Your Holy One to undergo decay. You will make known to me the path of life; in Your presence is fullness of joy; in Your right hand there are pleasures forever.” David had hope beyond the grave, Solomon sought pleasures before the grave, and found them empty and vain.

  21. Make The Lord Your Supreme Treasure III. All of God’s promises of eternal pleasure are secured by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ (16:8-11) 8 I have set the LORD continually before me; Because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. John 5:30 “I can do nothing on My own initiative. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.”

  22. Make The Lord Your Supreme Treasure III. All of God’s promises of eternal pleasure are secured by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ (16:8-11) 9 Therefore my heart is glad and my glory rejoices; My flesh also will dwell securely. Luke 4:28-30 28 And all the people in the synagogue were filled with rage as they heard these things; 29 and they got up and drove Him out of the city, and led Him to the brow of the hill on which their city had been built, in order to throw Him down the cliff. 30 But passing through their midst, He went His way.

  23. Make The Lord Your Supreme Treasure III. All of God’s promises of eternal pleasure are secured by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ (16:8-11) 10 For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol; Nor will You allow Your Holy One to undergo decay. Luke 24:38-43 38 And He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts?39 See My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself; touch Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.” 40 And when He had said this, He showed them His hands and His feet. 41 While they still could not believe it because of their joy and amazement, He said to them, “Have you anything here to eat?” 42 They gave Him a piece of a broiled fish; 43 and He took it and ate it before them.

  24. Make The Lord Your Supreme Treasure III. All of God’s promises of eternal pleasure are secured by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ (16:8-11) 11 You will make known to me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; In Your right hand there are pleasures forever. John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.”

  25. Big Idea When you make the Lord your supreme treasure, you will be satisfied with pleasures now and forever in Him.
