  2. Compromise • An agreement in which each side gives up some of what it wants.

  3. Provisional Government • A temporary government set up until an official election can be held.

  4. Regular Army • A force of full-time soldiers who serve for a set period of time.

  5. Siege • When an army surrounds a town or fort and waits for the enemy to give up.

  6. Cavalry • Soldiers on horseback.

  7. Infantry • Foot soldiers

  8. Reinforcements • Extra soldiers sent to a place to make the force there stronger.

  9. Bayonets • Long blades attached to the end of a rifle.

  10. Barracks • Building in which soldiers live

  11. Tactical Retreat • A purposeful and organized pullback of troops from an enemy.

  12. Atrocity • A cruel and brutal act
