  1. Final Idea Tara ClaytonGemma DeanTerry O’Brien

  2. Initial Idea • Musical/opera in a world where humans are the minority • Supernatural characters that were considered: vampires, zombies, werewolves, demons, faeries, witches, elves, ghosts, among others • Realistic about our abilities

  3. Our Idea • A supernatural drama about a half-demon, half-human girl who ventures into the seedy underbelly of an alternative Coventry, where demons rule and vampires are their pets, in order to save her male friend from their clutches.

  4. Rob Zombie

  5. Rob Zombie • House of 1000 Corpses • Over the top style • Use of comedy, dark and camp humor • The Devil’s Rejects • Darker and more serious than House of 1000 Corpses • Produced with little costume/make up

  6. Wes Craven

  7. Wes Craven • Has produced a lot of ‘horror’ films to critical success • Mixes ‘extreme horror’ with ‘normal life’ • Scream films have humorous content alongside the horror

  8. Alfred Hitchcock

  9. Alfred Hitchcock • Produced more than 50 feature films • Adds ‘surrealism’ into ‘normal life’ • Hides crucial information, from the audience and characters

  10. Darren Lynn Bousman

  11. Darren Lynn Bousman • Director of Saw 2, 3 & 4, also Repo! The Genetic Opera • Has a dark and graphic style within the horror genre • A personal inspiration

  12. Repo! The Genetic Opera

  13. Repo! The Genetic Opera • Opera, not a musical • Female lead, is not a strong character to start with, she has to overcome challenges • Uses multiple character’s storylines to tell one storyline

  14. Buffy The Vampire Slayer

  15. Buffy The Vampire Slayer • Strong female lead • Regularly has males in danger • She usually goes up against great evil - while the men are left at home • Changes misconceptions

  16. Veronica Mars

  17. Veronica Mars • A intelligent and independent female lead • Dialogue is witty and sharp, can be quite humorous • Strong supporting characters

  18. Bad Biology

  19. Bad Biology • We do not want to make this film! • Storyline and script are weak • Re-use of sets is obvious • Has not been interrogated creatively and technically • Low budget shouldn’t mean low quality

  20. Zombies, Zombies, Zombies

  21. Zombies, Zombies, Zombies • Does what it says on the tin! • Use of one location works effectively • Kitsch, camp, funny • Use its low budget effectively

  22. The Twilight Saga

  23. The Twilight Saga • Has created its own theology about an existing ‘myth’ • Female lead but has negative personality traits • Supporting characters are not 100% perfect • A engaging story that ends with ‘happily ever after’

  24. The Demon Underworld – Our Theology • The demons are resentful of society because they've been shunned and pushed underground • The demons are dissuaded from spending time with humans, and are punished for too much interaction • Humans are just pet food to demons and are not concerned with them • Demons do not look like stereotypical demons, they look like humans but have special powers

  25. Character Profile – Beretania ‘Bettie’ Perry • Lead female hero • Half-human (maternal), half-demon (paternal) but is unaware of her demon side • Aged sixteen to eighteen • Her family is the true ‘royal’ demon family, but were shunned as Bettie is not full demon • Believes her mother was killed in a car crash when she was young

  26. Character Profile – Max Reston • Male ‘damsel in distress’ • Human • Aged sixteen to eighteen • Is seduced by a succubus and taken into the demon world

  27. Character Profile – Malthor ‘Alan’ Perry • Bettie’s Dad • Demon royalty • Has protected Bettie from the demon world • He should be demon ruler but was ‘shunned’ from the role due to protecting Bettie

  28. Character Profile – Tristiana • Bettie’s cousin • Wants to be demon ruler and eventually rule over humans too • She can only become demon ruler if Bettie and her father are out of the picture

  29. Basic Storyline • Set in 2010 • Max is seduced by succubus sent by Tristiana as a way of drawing Bettie into the demon world to save him, and in turn Malthor to save Bettie. With Bettie and Malthor dead, Tristiana will become demon queen • In her attempt to save Max, Bettie learns the truth about the demon world, her heritage and her mother • During the ‘showdown’, Malthor attempts to kill Tristiana but is killed himself • Bettie kills Tristiana, after discovering her demon powers, and takes the crown • Bettie lives ‘happily ever after’ with Max

  30. Possible Cast • Tarrie Noir • Alternative model, has appeared in Bizzare and models for Big Deal clothing • Has acted in film Dangerous Parking, directed by Peter Howitt who also directed Johnny English and Sliding Doors

  31. Settings • Bettie’s home • Demon ‘council’ hall • Demon homes • External locations

  32. Possible Locations • Our/friends/family/cast/crew homes • May have space limitations though • Local community hall • May have a cost • Town/Streets • Will need permission • Book studio time • Will have to build a set

  33. Costume • Humans • Current trends as film is set in 2010 • Bettie dressed feminine with an edge • Demons • Dressed more confidently and sinister • Do not stand out completely from humans but do look different

  34. Kit Needed • Sony Z1 with batteries • Tripod • Monitor • Rifle microphone with fish pole • Headphones • Dedo lights • Editing suite • Cables e.g. XLR, extension cables, Firewire cable etc.

  35. Crew Requirements • Camera ops, lighting techs, runners etc. • Crew needs some experience • Second year students? • Will fill some roles ourselves

  36. Special Effects • Avoid special effects • Use of camera tricks e.g. insinuate something • Will attempt some effects but we need to be realistic about our budget

  37. Style • Camera Style • Tripod • No overly complex shots • Editing Style • Standard cuts between shots • Pauses of black for time/different locations • Script/Dialogue • Dialogue ‘witty’, aware of the situations • Needs to be fast-paced to keep tension and interest

  38. Financial Considerations • STUDENT FILM! • Transport • Cost of petrol to transport ourselves and equipment • Cast/crew • Will pay out travel costs • Use locals to keep costs down • Catering • Tea, coffee, milk, sugar, crisps, the basics to keep people going! • Costume • Our existing wardrobes, cast member wardrobes, charity shops • Special effects

  39. Output • For an online audience • Organize a film festival to screen the film for other students and alongside other local media products. • Enter into different short film festival competitions

  40. Other Ideas • Documentary On Alzheimer’s • Interview with family of somebody suffering from Alzheimer’s • A split screen horror film installation. • There is a film for the best case scenario and a worst case scenario during a zombie uprising. There will be soothing colors on the good side and agitating, mixed and jumpy lighting on the bad side. See which side people go to.

  41. Time • Organisation – Week by Week Schedule • Allowing time for script – Not Experienced • Rehearsals • Work around cast

  42. Possible Issues • Effects – Will it need it ? • Night shoots • Casting over 18 • Work – working around it • Budget

  43. Any questions?
