Kate Chopin (1850-1904) • Born in St. Louis, MO • Father died when she was 5 (railroad accident) • Married Oscar Chopin; died young, leaving her with 6 kids • Began writing fiction to cope with mother’s death • Wrote about Louisiana life, captured psychology of women and local color • Wrote about women striving for independence, individualism and equality
