We will cover • Shallow Water Blackout • Drowning • Hypothermia • Ear Injuries • Summary
Shallow Water Blackout • Hyperventilation • O2 Levels stay the same. Carbon Dioxide Levels reduced • Long, Deep Snorkel Dives • Exercise • Unconscious at Shallow Depth or on Surface • Treatment: • Check Breathing, EAR and Recover to Shore • CPR if necessary and Hospitalisation
Drowning • Can’t Breathe • Lower Body Temperature • Sea Water Drowning • Blood Concentrated • Fresh Water Drowning • Blood Diluted • Dry Drowning
Treatment • Remove victim from water • If necessary commence EAR with victim still on surface of water • Give C.P.R. if necessary • Treat for shock • Remove to hospital in all cases • Acquaint medical personnel with details of submersion e.g. type and duration • Secondary Drowning
Hypothermia • Normal Body core temperature 37°C (98.6°F) Reduction of body core temperature by 2°C = hypothermia. • Violent Shivering • Forgetfulness, Confusion and Personality Change • Blue / Gray Colouration • Loss of Co-ordination
Prevention • Wear good insulating garments (Hood and Good Wet suit) • Don’t over exercise in water • Acclimatisation to cold over long periods • Areas of greatest heat loss are... • Head • Neck • Sides • Groin
Treatment • Remove the victim from cold water and wet clothing • Rewarm with survival bag or by body heat of others • Give warm drinks if available (soup) • Never Give Alcohol • Keep out of wind. • Reheating is complete when victim starts to sweat
