  2. BACKGROUND • Funded by the State’s General Fund • Receive less than 11% of the guaranteed Prop 98 funding • Other funding sources: local property tax and federal sources

  3. BACKGROUND • Cut $10.5 million for 2008-09 • Initiated a hiring freeze • Eliminated winter intersession • Reduced spring 2009 by 330 courses • Eliminated most PT hourly positions • Maximized efficiency • Fees for facility use

  4. STATUS • Cut an additional $10 million • Closing Marketplace Education Center • Closing Anaheim Hills Education Center • Collective bargaining negotiations • Continue hiring freeze • Eliminate PT short-term positions wherever possible • Negotiate savings in health/welfare benefits • Fees for facility use • 4/10 work week • Reduction in community investment

  5. CHALLENGE • Reduced summer intersession • Reduced fall schedule • Reduction in student services • Long class waiting lists • Reduction or elimination of some special programs

  6. LOOKING AHEAD • Another $8-10 million cut or more in 2009-10 • Reduction in force – PT employees first • Furlough, pay cut, 4/10, reduction to 10-month assignments • No winter intersession • Reduce class sections, spring 2010 • Reduce or eliminate summer intersession, 2010 • Advocacy – regulatory relief • Grants and other funding sources

SUMMARY • Every educational agency is impacted • By June 2009, RSCCD will have cut $20.5 M • May need to cut an additional $10-30 M more in the 2009-2010 • Sustain commitment to students • Provide quality programs with fewer resources and staff • Reduced business hours • Reduction in student services • Vote on May 19!
