Be Sorry: Understanding Forgiveness and Making Good Choices

This lesson focuses on teaching children about the importance of being sorry, forgiveness, and making good choices. They will learn about the stories of Levi and Zacchaeus and discuss their feelings and experiences related to making choices. Children will also explore the concept of God's forgiveness through the words of Isaiah. This lesson is suitable for Year 1 students.

COME and SEE Reconciliation – Inter-relating (relate or connect to one another) BEING SORRY Be aware of what the Standard Summary at the end of each topic states LEVEL STANDARD SUMMARY Within Level 1, children will be able to talk about their experiences and feelings about making choices and be able to say what they wonder about in making choices. They will be able to recognise the story of the call of Levi and the encounter of Jesus with Zacchaeus as religious stories and some religious words like ‘being sorry’ and ‘forgiveness’. They will be able to recognise that people say sorry and forgive each other because they follow Jesus. Within Level 2, children will be able to ask and respond to questions about the consequences that choices have on others and themselves and about being sorry for the wrong choices they have made and be able to ask questions about how it can sometimes be difficult to forgive others. They will be able to retell the story of the call of Levi, the encounter of Jesus with Zacchaeus and/or the advice of Isaiah and will be able to use religious words like ‘forgiveness’ and ‘be sorry’ when they or others have made wrong choices. They will be able to describe how the priest uses God’s power to forgive those who are sorry and say so.

Do not use the title of the Learning Focus –this relates to the content overview only. Use previous work. Levi and Zacchaeus. • What is (Can you tell me )God’s promise? • How do you think people feel when they hear Isaiah’s words? • What kind things does (Can you retell me) what Isaiah suggests that we do? • Can you think of any other kind things to do? • What would the world be like if everyone followed Isaiah’s advice? Lots of love from Levi CONTENT | WHOLE CLASS CORE INPUT Think about the stories of Levi and Zacchaeus. Do you think they found it easy to change their ways and to be sorry? It is not easy to do this by ourselves, but God is there to help us, just as Jesus helped Levi and Zacchaeus. Isaiah wrote about God’s forgiveness, even before Jesus came to earth. He makes it clear what good choices we need to make to be kind and make ourselves and others happy as. Read his words in God’s Story page 48-49, Isaiah 58: 9-11, God’s promise, and display the pictures on the IWB. Share questions … How?

  7. Choose one activity • On a drawing of a large candle ask the children to write words that will show how they can be kind and ‘be a light that shines in the dark’. Share LO/WALT and use display/working wall Lower group Recognise the kind words from God’s Promise. (Re-reading the Scripture, highlighting the enlarged version together – TA support) Middle group Recognise the kind words from God’s Promise. (Write them onto post it notes using different coloured pens, add to large candle – teacher support) Higher group Retell the kind words from God’s Promise. How can I be kind to others? (independent write onto candle in books) • Reflect on learning • You are like a light that shines in the dark. • Battery tealight • Hold hands over • Can you see the light in the dark? • Why should we shine brightly? • Does it mean as a light? • Or can we be a light by being kind? • Take home tealight (hwk) to remember the message of Scripture • Retell Isaiah’s words at home. Use the rest of the key questions to challenge the children and review their learning… • What is God’s promise? • (Can you recognise )How do you think people feel when they hear Isaiah’s words? After the topic is completed …go back to the Summary statements …show where groups of children have evidenced standards. How can the evaluations be used to inform next planning?

  9. Lastly, show where groups are achieving the standards. What does this say and mean about the progress of different groups of children? Where are the gaps? E.g.. Are we allowing children to evidence through Knowledge and Understanding AND Engagement and Response? E.g.. Are we planning for children to be able to speak in a familiar group and share their ideas? E.g.. Are we singing appropriate songs/hymns to help children recognise and become familiar with Scripture?
