  2. WHAT'S DURALUMIN? • It’s light strong alloy of aluminum, copper, manganese, and . This was started in the 1910 by Alfred William (German metallurgist).At first this was only available in Germany. Duralumin is soft,ductile, and workable in the normal state; they may be rolled, forged, extruded, or drawn into a variety of shapes and products. Its’ light weight and high strength makes them suitable for something that needs to be strong and light at the same time. That’s why it is suitable for an airplane. (also called duraluminum or dural), a collective name for a group of alloys based on aluminum and containing 3-5 percent copper, 0.4-2.4 percent magnesium, and 0.3-1.0 percent manganese.

  3. WHAT IS IT MADE UP OF? • The main alloying constituents are mainly aluminium, zinc, magnesium and a few percentage of copper.3-5 percent copper, 0.4-2.4 percent magnesium, and 0.3-1.0 percent manganese.

DURALUMIN • It’s a strong, hard, lightweight alloy of aluminum, widely used in aircraft construction, discovered and patented in 1910 by Alfred William , a German metallurgist; it was originally made only at Düren in Germany. The original composition has been varied for particular applications; it may contain about 3 or 4 percent copper, 1/2 to 1 percent manganese, 1/2 to 1 1/2 percent magnesium, and, in some formulations, some silicon. After heat treatment and aging, these alloys are comparable to soft steel in strength. The Duralumin alloys were the first widely used deformable aluminum alloys.

  5. Continuation….. • The phenomenon of hardening during natural aging was discovered with quenched duralumin. The semi-continuous method is used to cast Duralumin into ingots, which undergo pressure treatment (rolling, pressing, and so on) to produce plates, sheets, sections, tubes, and wire for making rivets, forgings, and other intermediate products. Duralumin is quenched in water at a temperature of about 500°C and then undergoes natural aging for four days or, less frequently, artificial aging at about 190°C.

  6. And another continuation…. • After such heat treatment the ultimate strength of various grades of Duralumin is about 400-500 mega newtons per sq m (40-50 kilograms-force per sq mm). The initial period of development of metal airplane construction was associated with the manufacture of Duralumin. Along with aluminum alloys, Duralumin is widely used in aviation, surface transportation, and mechanical engineering. This is also suitable because it is corrosion resistant to acids and sea water.
