  3. Origin of project • i-base commissioned research in 2007– assessing treatment information needs of Africans living with HIV • Five focus groups in London • Emerging issues • Recommendations from report

  4. African Outreach Project • to build of treatment knowledge of PLWHIV • train & develop a network of treatment advocates who will be able to deliver sustainable treatment support for African communities • to help develop wider community awareness and confidence in treatment

  5. Pilot project – Phase 1 • Delivered treatment sessions for 8 weeks (2 hour session per week) to about 20 participants • Used current treatment manual • Sessions facilitated by two i-base staff members

  6. Pilot Project – Phase 2 • 12 aspiring treatment advocates • 8 weeks of training – quizzes, co-facilitation • Ready to join UKCAB

  7. Learning • A lot of enthusiasm from participants • Re-structuring manual • A long process

  8. Short term • Revising manual • Training programme scheduled to start mid-September 2009 • One off session for all trained advocates in December 2009 • 10 Active treatment advocates by end of 2009

  9. Long term • Two to three training programmes a year • Advocates to facilitate training programme • Promote and deliver it all over the UK • Evaluate programme
