This lesson focuses on the rules for adding vowel suffixes to base words in Grade 4. We define a suffix and identify vowel suffixes, which start with a vowel. Students will learn the Doubling Rule for words with short vowel sounds, where the final consonant is doubled, and the Dropping Rule for words with long vowel sounds, which involves dropping the silent 'e.' Through examples and practice, students will enhance their spelling and understanding of how vowel suffixes change base words.

Vowel suffixes • A suffix is a letter or letters added AFTER the base word to create a new word. • We know a suffix is a VOWEL suffix if the first letter of the suffix is a vowel. • Examples: • - ing • - y • -ed • -er • est
Adding vowel suffixes • When you add a vowel suffix to a base word, you MUST know if the final syllable of the base word has a short or long vowel sound. • DOUBLING RULE: When you hear a base word with a short vowel sound, double the final consonant before adding the vowel suffix. • DROPPING RULE: When you hear a base word with a long vowel sound, drop the silent e before adding the vowel suffix.
